What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Manager Transformer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineering Manager Transformer, you need a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles, transformer design, and manufacturing processes, usually backed by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, power system analysis tools, and industry standards such as IEEE or IEC, along with relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), is highly valuable. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring technical excellence, team productivity, and the successful delivery of complex transformer projects.

What is an Engineering Manager Transformer?

An Engineering Manager Transformer is a leadership position focused on managing teams that develop, implement, and maintain transformer models, which are a type of machine learning model commonly used in natural language processing and other AI applications. This role combines technical expertise in transformer architectures with management responsibilities such as team coordination, project oversight, and mentoring engineers. Engineering Manager Transformers play a crucial role in setting technical direction, ensuring best practices, and facilitating collaboration across cross-functional teams. Their work impacts the successful deployment of large-scale AI solutions and helps organizations stay at the forefront of machine learning innovation.

What are some typical challenges an Engineering Manager Transformer faces when leading cross-functional teams?

Engineering Manager Transformers often navigate complex project requirements that require close collaboration between electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams. One common challenge is aligning diverse technical perspectives and ensuring effective communication to meet project deadlines. Additionally, balancing resource allocation while maintaining high standards for safety and compliance can be demanding. Successful managers foster a collaborative environment and proactively address any knowledge gaps within the team to deliver high-quality transformer solutions.

Location
McLean, VA, Richmond, VA, or New York City preferred

About the role
As an Engineering Manager for Cloud Platform Engineering, you will lead a team responsible for the infrastructure, deployment platforms, CI/CD standards, Kubernetes environments, Terraform modules, observability practices, and operational foundations that enable Exiger engineering teams to build and run reliable software at scale.
This role is ideal for an engineering leader with recent experience managing platform, infrastructure, DevOps, SRE, or cloud engineering teams. You do not need to be the deepest hands-on expert in every tool, but you should be able to guide technical direction, evaluate tradeoffs, challenge designs, coach engineers, and partner with leadership on platform strategy.
The role will work closely with frontend, backend, infrastructure, security, and product teams, but the primary focus is cloud platform engineering, operational excellence, infrastructure standards, and scalable delivery practices.
What you'll do
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of approximately 10 engineers across platform, infrastructure, backend, and related engineering disciplines.
  • Set technical direction for Exiger's cloud platform, including AWS infrastructure, Kubernetes-based application delivery, Terraform/IaC standards, CI/CD, observability, and operational practices.
  • Define short-term and long-term platform priorities and ensure active projects align with engineering and business goals.
  • Partner with application engineering teams to provide reusable platform capabilities, self-service workflows, documentation, and operational standards.
  • Act as an organizational resource to unblock and enable multiple engineering teams across diverse platform and infrastructure challenges.
  • Lead major platform initiatives that improve reliability, scalability, security, developer productivity, and cost efficiency.
  • Instill and promote a culture of learning, engineering excellence, ownership, and platform accountability across engineering.
  • Own standards for runbooks, platform documentation, incident response readiness, and operational knowledge sharing.
  • Guide CI/CD, deployment, rollback, testing, and self-healing architecture improvements.
  • Partner with AWS account teams and internal stakeholders to evaluate AWS services and influence adoption where appropriate.
  • Contribute to planning, staffing, and financial decisions that support the long-term success of the platform team.
  • Lead hiring, technical interview calibration, and team growth planning for platform engineering.
  • Help Exiger transition from rapid delivery to sustainable, secure, high-quality delivery at scale.
What you bring to the team
Required
  • 6+ years of hands-on engineering experience, with meaningful experience in backend, infrastructure, platform, DevOps, SRE, or cloud engineering.
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience leading software, infrastructure, platform, DevOps, or SRE teams.
  • Recent experience leading or operating production cloud infrastructure, preferably in AWS.
  • Strong working knowledge of infrastructure as code, especially Terraform or similar tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of Kubernetes or container-based application platforms.
  • Experience with CI/CD, deployment automation, release management, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions, evaluate architecture tradeoffs, and guide engineers without needing to personally implement every change.
  • Experience building or operating reliable, scalable SaaS, PaaS, or internal platform systems.
  • Proven ability to mentor engineers, build ownership, manage delivery, and foster a strong engineering culture.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to partner across engineering, product, security, finance, and executive stakeholders.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a security clearance in the future.
Preferred
  • Experience with AWS account strategy, IAM, networking, EKS, RDS, SQS, Lambda, or other AWS services used in production platforms.
  • Experience with GitOps tools such as ArgoCD, Kargo, or Flux.
  • Experience building or operating internal developer platforms, golden paths, or self-service infrastructure workflows.
  • Experience with observability stacks such as LGTM, ELK, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar.
  • Experience with Java, Python, or Go-based application ecosystems.
  • Experience operating in FedRAMP, DOD Impact Level, air-gapped, or compliance-heavy environments.
  • Experience working in a rapidly evolving, PE-backed or high-growth company.
  • Active security clearance.
Our tech stack
Core platform stack: AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, Kargo, LGTM, ELK
Application ecosystem: Java, Python, Go
Candidates are not expected to be deep experts in every tool, but should have enough platform engineering experience to lead technical direction, assess tradeoffs, and support teams operating in this environment.
Candidate preferences and requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a security clearance in the future.
  • Active clearance is a plus.
  • Preferred locations are McLean, VA, Richmond, VA, or New York City.
  • Remote candidates may be considered if they bring exceptionally strong cloud platform engineering leadership experience.
