What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager transformer?

To excel as an Engineering Manager Transformer, you need a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles, transformer design, and manufacturing processes, usually backed by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, power system analysis tools, and industry standards such as IEEE or IEC, along with relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), is highly valuable. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring technical excellence, team productivity, and the successful delivery of complex transformer projects.

What is an engineering manager transformer?

An Engineering Manager Transformer is a leadership position focused on managing teams that develop, implement, and maintain transformer models, which are a type of machine learning model commonly used in natural language processing and other AI applications. This role combines technical expertise in transformer architectures with management responsibilities such as team coordination, project oversight, and mentoring engineers. Engineering Manager Transformers play a crucial role in setting technical direction, ensuring best practices, and facilitating collaboration across cross-functional teams. Their work impacts the successful deployment of large-scale AI solutions and helps organizations stay at the forefront of machine learning innovation.

What are some typical challenges an engineering manager transformer faces when leading cross-functional teams?

Engineering Manager Transformers often navigate complex project requirements that require close collaboration between electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams. One common challenge is aligning diverse technical perspectives and ensuring effective communication to meet project deadlines. Additionally, balancing resource allocation while maintaining high standards for safety and compliance can be demanding. Successful managers foster a collaborative environment and proactively address any knowledge gaps within the team to deliver high-quality transformer solutions.

Job description

About Tapestry
Tapestry is a team within Alphabet working to build the AI-powered electric grid. We are tackling one of the world's most important infrastructure challenges: helping the energy system become more visible, understandable, reliable, affordable, abundant, and clean.
Originally born at X, Alphabet's moonshot factory, Tapestry brings together experts in energy, AI, software, engineering, and product to build tools that help the electricity ecosystem plan smarter, move faster, and operate more efficiently.
This is a global effort. Tapestry supports partners across the U.S., U.K., Chile, New Zealand, Australia, and Brazil as they work toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Joining Tapestry means doing high-impact work with a multidisciplinary team tackling a problem that matters at global scale. Learn more about our team and our mission here.
About the Role
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead and grow a world-class team of engineers dedicated to ensuring our systems meet the needs of an evolving electric grid across the planet. You will be responsible for the technical strategy and infrastructure that powers our global deployments in countries like Chile, Australia, and the U.S.
Why this role is a great fit: You are a technical leader who excels at building high-performing engineering teams from the ground up. You enjoy bridging the gap between high-level product vision and deep technical architecture, ensuring our distributed systems are as resilient as the physical grids they model.
How You Will Make 10X Impact
  • Scale the Team: Recruit, hire, and mentor a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of ownership, inclusive collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Architect for the Future: Establish the foundation for our technology, tools, and technical strategy to ensure our distributed systems can handle massive data processing and complex modeling.
  • Bridge the Ecosystem: Work closely with Product, UX, Data Science, Machine Learning, and Power Systems experts to drive alignment and translate complex energy requirements into reliable software.
  • Navigate Complexity: Provide deep technical guidance on design and implementation, remaining willing to be hands-on to unblock the team and solve critical bottlenecks.

What You Should Have
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in a technical leadership role overseeing strategic projects, with at least 2 years of direct people management experience.
  • 8+ years of experience building and maintaining highly scalable, reliable cloud-based production systems (GCP preferred).
  • Proven experience with large-scale data processing, backend services, and frontend design for enterprise-grade applications.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate the ambiguity of a fast-growing environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate complex ML and software concepts for diverse audiences.

It'd Be Great If You Also Had One or More of These
  • Working knowledge or a background in power systems, electrical engineering, or grid optimization.
  • Experience with RDF or other graph database technologies.
  • Experience working in high-growth environments with rapidly changing requirements.
  • Familiarity with modern software development practices for global enterprise partners.

Our values
  • Take charge: We take initiative and own outcomes that move the mission forward.
  • Transform with purpose: We build solutions that solve real problems and create meaningful impact.
  • Be a Tapestry, not a thread: We collaborate across diverse skills and perspectives to achieve more than we can individually.
  • Always fine-tune: We stay curious, seek feedback, and refine our understanding as we learn.
  • Stay grounded: We listen openly, value different perspectives, and stay focused on what matters most.

What we offer
A culture that supports growth, ownership, and meaningful impact, along with:
  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Generous PTO and flexible hybrid work model
  • 401(k) with employer contribution
  • Professional development
  • The ability to work on important real-world problems within an Alphabet-backed environment

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $207,000 - $304,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
