What is an engineering expeditor?

Engineering Expeditors are professionals responsible for ensuring that materials, components, and equipment required for engineering projects are delivered on time and meet quality standards. They coordinate between suppliers, vendors, project managers, and engineering teams to track orders, resolve delays, and maintain schedules. Their work is critical in minimizing project downtime and ensuring smooth operations in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and oil and gas.

How does an engineering expeditor typically collaborate with project managers and vendors during a project's lifecycle?

Engineering Expeditors play a key role in facilitating smooth communication between project managers, engineering teams, and external vendors. They are responsible for tracking the status of materials and equipment, ensuring that all components are delivered on schedule to avoid project delays. Regular coordination meetings, status updates, and proactive issue resolution are common parts of their daily routine. By maintaining clear documentation and promptly addressing supply chain issues, Expeditors help keep projects on track and support the overall efficiency of the engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering expeditor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Expeditor, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of supply chain or engineering processes, often supported by a relevant associate or bachelor's degree. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, inventory management software, and procurement tools is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills help you coordinate effectively between engineering, purchasing, and vendors. These skills ensure timely delivery of materials and components, minimizing project delays and supporting efficient operations.

This position supports past due recovery, shortage resolution, job movement, PO follow-up, and escalation of issues that prevent production from executing as planned.
This position is on-site (not remote/not hybrid) and not eligible for Visa sponsorship or transfer of Visa sponsorship.
Requirements
1. Material and Supplier Expediting
โ€ข Follow-up on late, urgent, or at-risk purchase orders that impact production schedules
โ€ข Coordinate with purchasing to obtain supplier status, updated promise dates, and recovery plans
โ€ข Escalate supplier delays that may impact customer commitments or production priorities
โ€ข Monitor material shortage reports and help drive timely updates
โ€ข Support dock, receiving, inspection, and inventory follow-up when expedited material arrives
โ€ข Communicate material recovery status to planning, scheduling, and production teams
2. Production Job Expediting

โ€ข Escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate planner, scheduler, buyer, or manager
โ€ข Support daily shortage meetings, production meetings, and past due recovery reviews
โ€ข Help ensure urgent issues do not get lost between departments
4. System and Report Updates
โ€ข Use Epicor Kinetic, Planet Together APS, Excel, and other reports to identify late or at-risk items
โ€ข Update trackers, comments, notes, or status fields as required by department process
โ€ข Ensure expediting status is clear, current, and visible to stakeholders
โ€ข Identify data discrepancies that impact expediting accuracy and escalate for correction
โ€ข Support cleanup of open actions related to shortages, late Pos, job holds, or past due work

โ€ข Provide clear and timely status updates on critical items
โ€ข Help coordinate handoffs between departments when urgent work requires immediate attention
โ€ข Support customer escalation responses by providing current internal status and recovery timing
โ€ข Build strong working relationships across the shop floor and support teams
6. Continuous Improvement Support
โ€ข Identify recurring causes of expedited work, late supply, or blocked jobs
โ€ข Provide feedback to planners, schedulers, buyers, and managers on process gaps
โ€ข Support improvements to shortage review, job tracking, receiving flow, and escalation processes
โ€ข Help document expediting processes and standard work
