Engineering Economics information
Is engineering economics difficult?
What are the typical responsibilities of an engineering economics professional?
Engineering Economics professionals are typically responsible for evaluating the financial viability of engineering projects, conducting cost-benefit analyses, and preparing detailed economic forecasts to guide project planning. They often collaborate closely with engineering teams, project managers, and financial departments to gather data, assess risk, and ensure resources are optimally allocated. On a daily basis, they may work on developing financial models, presenting findings to decision-makers, and recommending strategies to improve project efficiency and profitability. This interdisciplinary work enables organizations to make data-driven investment and project management decisions.
What is engineering economics?
An Engineering Economics job involves applying economic principles to engineering projects to ensure cost efficiency and financial feasibility. Professionals in this field analyze costs, evaluate investment decisions, and optimize resource allocation for engineering projects. They work in industries like construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure development to balance technical and financial considerations. Their role helps organizations make data-driven decisions that maximize profitability while maintaining project sustainability.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in engineering economics?
To excel in Engineering Economics, you need strong quantitative analysis, economic modeling, and engineering fundamentals, usually backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with financial analysis software, spreadsheet modeling, and cost estimation tools is highly valuable, and certification such as Professional Engineering (PE) or specialized economics credentials can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills help professionals explain complex cost-benefit analyses to technical and non-technical stakeholders. These competencies ensure accurate economic assessments and informed decision-making, directly impacting project viability and resource allocation.

At EEI, we believe in doing things the right way, with excellence, integrity, and genuine care for our people. As an employee-owned company, our People First culture is rooted in trust, accountability, and shared success.
As an Assistant Project Manager, you will play a key role in supporting the successful delivery of commissioning and building performance projects for healthcare facilities, data centers, laboratories, universities, and other complex environments. You'll work alongside experienced Project Managers, engineers, contractors, and owners to help ensure building systems perform as intended while contributing to projects that make buildings safer, more efficient, and more reliable.
In this role, you'll support project planning, commissioning activities, testing, documentation, scheduling, and client communication while gaining hands-on experience across all phases of project delivery. You'll help coordinate project teams, solve technical challenges, track progress, and contribute to high-quality outcomes that create lasting value for our clients.
This position is ideal for someone with an entrepreneurial mindset who enjoys problem-solving, collaborating with diverse teams, and learning the technical and leadership skills needed to grow into a Project Manager or Commissioning Authority role. If you're passionate about building systems, project delivery, and developing strong client relationships, you'll find an excellent opportunity to build your career at EEI.
Essential Responsibilities:

- Technical Documentation: Prepare and maintain commissioning reports, test procedures, deficiency logs, project records, and client deliverables.
- Client & Team Collaboration: Build strong working relationships with owners, contractors, engineers, vendors, and project stakeholders while supporting effective communication throughout project delivery.
- Problem Solving & Quality Assurance: Help identify, document, and resolve project issues while ensuring systems meet project requirements, performance goals, and quality standards.
- Project Management Support: Assist with schedule management, meeting coordination, proposal support, change management, risk identification, and project tracking activities.
- Professional Growth: Continuously develop your knowledge of building systems, commissioning processes, project management practices, and industry standards.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Building Sciences, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in commissioning, project management, building systems, controls, construction, healthcare, laboratory, mission-critical, or other high-reliability environments.

- Experience supporting project delivery activities including schedule management, budgeting, client coordination, documentation management, and risk identification.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, construction documents, and sequences of operation.
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, project management software, and project collaboration tools.
- Currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
Preferred
- Experience supporting healthcare, data center, laboratory, higher education, industrial, federal, or other complex facility projects.
- Experience with commissioning, startup, testing, balancing (TAB), controls, quality assurance, or construction turnover processes.
- Professional certifications such as LEED AP, PMP, CCP, CBCP, CxA, EIT, PE, or similar industry credentials are a plus but not required.
