|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | High school diploma or equivalent; some technical training | Associate's degree or technical certification in engineering technology |
| Work Environment | Fieldwork, assisting engineers, data collection | Laboratory, office, or field; more technical tasks |

The main difference between an Engineering Aide and an Engineering Technician lies in their education and responsibilities. Engineering Aides typically have a high school diploma and assist engineers with basic tasks, while Engineering Technicians usually hold an associate degree and perform more technical, specialized work. Both roles are essential in engineering projects, but the Technician role generally requires more formal technical training.
As an engineering aide, you perform a variety of support duties to ensure the safe and proper construction of buildings and other structures. Your duties are to plan a schedule for the project, assist with cost estimation, and do surveying on the job site to ensure all information is as accurate as possible. With this information, your employer may expect you to create architectural drawings, supervise the departmental library, and supervise other employees and contractors during the construction process. Some companies ask you to monitor inventory, maintain records, and do the paperwork to ensure your company has the necessary permits for its work.
