What is an Engineering Manager?

An Engineering Manager is a professional who oversees engineering teams, guiding them to achieve project goals and company objectives. They are responsible for managing people, processes, and resources, ensuring that engineering projects are completed on time and within budget. Engineering Managers also collaborate with other departments, mentor team members, and help develop technical strategies. Their role bridges the gap between technical engineering tasks and organizational leadership.

How does an Engineer Manager typically support professional development within their team?

Engineer Managers play a key role in fostering the growth of their team members by providing regular feedback, identifying learning opportunities, and encouraging participation in training or mentorship programs. They often help engineers set clear career goals, guide them through skill development, and advocate for their advancement within the organization. By promoting a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, Engineer Managers help team members stay motivated and aligned with both personal and company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong technical background in engineering principles, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly certifications like PMP or Agile Scrum Master are typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills help you motivate teams and manage stakeholders effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering successful projects, fostering a productive team environment, and driving organizational goals.

  • Drives secure development practices across the lifecycle, including application security, vulnerability management, and compliance with secure coding standards.
  • Identifies opportunities to leverage AI/ML and Generative AI to improve engineering productivity and enhance product capabilities.
  • Manages client expectations and balances organizational and customer priorities to ensure successful delivery and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Maintains revenue forecasts, identifies risks to financial targets, and adjusts delivery and product strategies to meet business commitments.
  • Strengthens relationships with partners, systems integrators, and external stakeholders to support product adoption and growth.
  • Provides leadership in executive-level discussions to influence product strategy, delivery priorities, and investment decisions.
  • Builds and leads high-performing engineering teams, including hiring, mentoring, performance management, and fostering a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement without micromanagement.
  • Oversees operating and personnel budgets, ensuring disciplined execution, resource optimization, and alignment to organizational goals.

What we're looking for
  • 9 or more years of proven experience in Engineering Leadership, with a consistent record of driving multi-stream delivery, owning outcomes, effectively managing priorities, and delivering measurable business results
  • technical expertise in AWS Cloud Platforms, including Cloud Native Architecture, Microservices, APIs, CI CD practices, DevOps, and Infrastructure as code, supported by a strong foundation in .NET Development and a solid understanding of Distributed Systems
  • Strong emphasis on Security and Compliance, with hands on experience Implementing Secure Development Practices, application Security Testing, Vulnerability Management, and working within Compliance Driven Environments
  • Exposure to AI and Emerging Technologies, with the ability to identify and apply practical use cases that enhance engineering productivity and support innovation in product features
  • Proven leader of people and stakeholders with experience in Agile and SAFe Environments, strong communication skills, and the ability to mentor teams, drive accountability, manage performance, and lead effectively through ambiguity

What you should expect in this role
  • Fully remote opportunity with the option to work anywhere within the United States
  • Opportunities to travel through your work (0-10%)
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule to accommodate business needs and travel as required
  • Video cameras must be used during all interviews, as well as during the initial week of orientation
