The Department of Applied Physical Sciences educates the next generation of groundbreaking and entrepreneurial scientists in its nationally ranked Material Sciences graduate program and in its newly-launched undergraduate programs, a major (BS in Applied Sciences with 2 tracks, Materials Engineering and Environmental Engineering) and a minor in Applied Sciences and Engineering. The Department administers BeAM (Be A Maker), a university-wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including makerspaces in Hanes Art Center and Carmichael Resident Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serve the entire UNC community.
Position Summary
The position oversees the daily operations of the Applied Sciences teaching laboratories, ensuring an organized, safe, and high-functioning environment that supports effective instruction. This role provides comprehensive instructional support by mastering laboratory equipment, developing training materials and SOPs, and collaborating with faculty to refine and create laboratory activities. The position manages laboratory resources through equipment maintenance, calibration, repairs, computer support, and inventory oversight. Additionally, the role leads environmental health and safety functions by developing and implementing safety plans, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and coordinating safety inspections. Through a combination of instructional design, lab operations, skilled technical work, and EHS leadership, the position ensures seamless, high-quality support for faculty, teaching assistants, and students across all laboratory-based courses.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Management Preferences
  • Experience working in instructional, teaching, or research laboratory environments, including direct support of faculty and instructors in the design, improvement, and delivery of laboratory activities and demonstrations.
  • Hands-on experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting advanced laboratory instrumentation, such as mechanical testing systems (e.g., Instron), electronic test benches, microscopes, ovens, and SEM or similar equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop laboratory documentation and training resources, including SOPs, instructional guides, and user training materials, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills applied to equipment and operational challenges.
  • Knowledge of academic and laboratory safety standards (OSHA, NFPA, and institutional EHS policies), with experience assisting in safety planning, inspections, and compliance efforts.
  • Experience supporting laboratory operations and systems, including inventory and asset management, procurement platforms, laboratory computer configuration, instructional software, and leading small projects or process improvements while managing multiple concurrent needs.
