What is an engineer lab manager?

Engineer Lab Managers are professionals who oversee the daily operations of engineering laboratories. They ensure that lab equipment is maintained, supervise staff and researchers, enforce safety protocols, and manage budgets and inventory. Their role often includes coordinating experiments, supporting research and development projects, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Effective communication and organizational skills are essential, as they serve as a link between engineers, technicians, and management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer lab manager?

To thrive as an Engineer Lab Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, laboratory management experience, and usually a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with lab management software, safety protocols, and quality standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 is typically required. Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills help you manage teams, delegate tasks, and ensure smooth lab operations. These skills and qualifications are essential to maintain high-quality research, ensure safety compliance, and achieve project goals efficiently.

What are some common challenges faced by engineer lab managers in maintaining efficient laboratory operations?

Engineer Lab Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing administrative duties with hands-on technical work, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and coordinating equipment maintenance or calibration. They must also manage a diverse team of engineers and technicians, which requires strong communication and leadership skills. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing technologies and project priorities can be demanding, making effective organizational skills essential for success in this role.

Job description

Susteon is an advanced materials company based in the Research Triangle (Morrisville), North Carolina. We design and scale the sorbents, solvents, and catalysts that make industrial processes cleaner, more efficient, and more competitive, spanning carbon capture and utilization, carbon-free hydrogen production, and the conversion of waste into energy and valuable products.
What sets us apart is speed. Our Experimental Materials Platform (EMP) is an AI-driven, closed-loop discovery engine that pairs machine learning with automated experimentation to develop new materials in a fraction of the usual time and cost. It's how we move breakthroughs from the lab to commercial scale, and how we keep advanced materials innovation and manufacturing here in the U.S.
We work in close partnership with national labs, universities, and major industrial players to take promising chemistry out of the lab and into the field.
If you want to build the materials behind the next generation of American energy and industrial technology, we'd like to hear from you. Your work here will have real impact at scale.
About the role
We are seeking a motivated Laboratory Technician to support our catalysis team. You will work alongside our scientists and engineers on an industrial catalyst-discovery program for renewable fuels, preparing and synthesizing catalyst samples, operating analytical and reaction-product instruments, and capturing rigorous, structured data in our Experimental Materials Platform (EMP).
This is a hands-on, instrument-heavy role for someone who takes pride in precision, safety, and continuous learning. The program is the immediate focus, but the capability is durable: this role supports Susteon's broader materials pipeline across solvents, sorbents, catalysts, and reactors.
What you will do
  • Prepare and synthesize heterogeneous catalyst samples under scientific direction, including precipitation, impregnation, and supported and bulk systems
  • Operate analytical and reaction-product instruments per SOPs, with an emphasis on gas chromatography (GC) for reaction-product analysis
  • Run post-reaction characterization as a core part of the workflow, not an afterthought, including thermal and surface-area analysis
  • Capture every experiment, including negative results, as clean, ML-ready data in the EMP
  • Support 100 g scale-up synthesis and bench demonstration of lead catalyst candidates
  • Maintain accurate laboratory notebook records and contribute to SOPs under scientific guidance
  • Keep instruments calibrated, maintained, and ready for concurrent analyses
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field preferred
  • Experience: 3 to 5 years of equivalent laboratory experience considered in lieu of a degree
  • Location: On-site in Morrisville, NC required, Monday through Friday
Desired Technical Skills
  • Strong support of a safety culture, with working knowledge of PPE requirements and lab safety protocols
  • Preparation, synthesis, and testing of catalyst samples and solutions as directed by Scientists and Engineers
  • Operation of analytical instruments according to SOPs, with preference for experience on:
    • Gas Chromatography (GC) and process gas analysis
    • TGA / DSC (thermal analysis)
    • Surface Area Analysis (BET)
    • Temperature-Programmed Reduction / Desorption (TPR / TPD) and chemisorption
    • X-Ray Diffraction (XRD)
    • FTIR Spectroscopy
    • Auto-Titrator and TIC / TOC / TN Analyzer
  • Accurate record-keeping using a laboratory notebook and structured digital data entry
  • Experience authoring or contributing to SOPs under scientific guidance
Desired Soft Skills
  • Unwavering commitment to safety and data integrity
  • Aptitude and genuine desire to learn new analytical techniques
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage data across multiple concurrent analyses
  • Clear technical writing ability for documentation and reporting
  • Comfortable multi-tasking across instruments and analyses in a fast-paced R&D environment
