Job Purpose
Lab Fabricator
Location: Fort Wayne, IN
Shift: 2nd Shift
Salary: $31.00-$37.00/hr.
The Lab Fabricator is responsible for hands-on CNC machining and fabrication of laboratory specimens to support research and development activities. This role involves setting up, operating, and programming CNC equipment to ensure parts meet required quality and dimensional standards.
The individual will play a key role in selecting tooling and equipment, building and maintaining fixtures, and troubleshooting machining processes to support reliable production and testing. This position also contributes to improving fabrication efficiency, reducing waste and cycle time, and maintaining consistent shop-floor operations.
Principal Accountabilities
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures while actively maintaining a safe, clean fabrication environment
  • Maintain 6S standards and ensure tools, equipment, and workspaces are organized and production-ready
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on fabrication equipment to minimize downtime
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC machines for precision specimen fabrication
  • Develop and edit CNC programs to improve part quality and machining efficiency
  • Fabricate, assemble, and modify parts and components to support lab testing and R&D activities
  • Build and repair custom equipment, tooling, and fixtures for laboratory use
  • Select and set up appropriate tooling, workholding, and machine parameters based on part requirements
  • Design and fabricate fixtures to improve repeatability and ease of testing
  • Support day-to-day lab operations by producing test specimens accurately and on schedule
  • Work closely with engineers and technicians to interpret drawings, models, and specifications
  • Troubleshoot fabrication issues and make real-time adjustments to processes and setups
  • Assist with equipment installation, setup, and shop layout changes for new or expanded capabilities
  • Identify inefficiencies on the floor and implement practical improvements to processes and workflows
  • Monitor part quality and ensure fabricated specimens meet required tolerances and specifications
  • Maintain documentation for setups, processes, and fabrication procedures
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and production needs

Knowledge / Skills / Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in tooling, machining, and/or fabrication
  • Journeyman Toolmaker or Machinist certification, preferred
  • Strong mathematical and mechanical aptitude
  • Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively
  • Solid understanding of computer hardware and software systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and familiarity with Minitab
  • Strong communication skills with fluency in English
