Engineer Controls Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Controls Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controls Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, automation, and control systems, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, and industry certifications such as ISA or Siemens are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable automation solutions in complex industrial environments.

What are some common challenges Controls Engineers face when working on automation projects?

Controls Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new automation technologies with existing systems, troubleshooting complex hardware and software issues, and ensuring that all control systems meet safety and regulatory requirements. Effective communication with multidisciplinary teams—including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers—is essential to resolve technical problems efficiently. Additionally, staying updated with rapidly evolving industry standards and technologies is crucial for long-term success in this role.

Can you make $500,000 as an electrical engineer?

Electrical engineers, including controls engineers, typically earn salaries below $500,000 annually, with top earners in specialized industries or executive roles reaching higher compensation. Achieving such a salary usually requires extensive experience, advanced certifications, leadership positions, or working in high-paying sectors like aerospace or energy. Most control engineers earn between $70,000 and $130,000 per year, depending on location and expertise.

What is the difference between Engineer Controls Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectControls EngineerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Mechanical, or Controls Engineering; certifications like Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST)Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, automation facilitiesPower plants, electronics, telecommunications, industrial facilities
Industry UsageAutomation, manufacturing, process controlPower systems, electronics, telecommunications

Controls Engineers focus on designing, developing, and maintaining control systems for automation and manufacturing processes, while Electrical Engineers work on electrical systems, power distribution, and electronic devices. Both roles require similar credentials and often overlap in industrial environments, but their primary responsibilities and areas of expertise differ.

What are Controls Engineers?

Controls Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain systems used to control machinery and processes in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and energy. They work with hardware and software to ensure automated systems operate efficiently, safely, and reliably. Controls Engineers often program PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), develop control algorithms, and troubleshoot automation issues. Their work is critical in optimizing production processes and integrating new technologies within industrial environments.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior control engineers, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills in automation, and advanced certifications, can earn $300,000 or more annually. High-paying roles often involve leadership responsibilities, working in industries like aerospace, oil and gas, or large manufacturing, and may require expertise in PLCs, SCADA systems, and programming languages such as Python or C++.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced controls engineers working in specialized industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, or advanced manufacturing can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially with senior roles, bonuses, and profit sharing. These positions often require advanced skills in automation, programming, and certifications, along with extensive industry experience.

How much do control engineers get paid?

Control engineers typically earn a median annual salary between $70,000 and $110,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior or specialized control engineers with advanced skills in automation, PLC programming, and control systems may earn higher salaries, especially in high-demand sectors like manufacturing and energy.

Position Overview
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, develop, and maintain industrial control systems that support safe, reliable, and efficient operations across our facilities. This role focuses on HMI and PLC programming, process control panel design and implementation, and system integration to meet production and compliance objectives. The engineer will partner with engineering, operations, and vendors to deliver standardized, documented control solutions and support commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop PLC and HMI applications to control and monitor process equipment and systems.
  • Specify, design, and oversee fabrication of process control panels, including layout, wiring schematics, and component selection.
  • Integrate control systems across multiple protocols and networks (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet) and ensure interoperability with SCADA/MES platforms.
  • Develop and maintain control system documentation: functional descriptions, I/O lists, ladder/structured text code, sequence of operations, and wiring diagrams.
  • Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, and start-up support for new and modified control systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and communications issues in live production environments.
  • Ensure control systems comply with applicable electrical and safety standards such as NEC and UL and adhere to corporate design standards and change control processes.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, process, and operations teams to translate requirements into effective control strategies and panel designs.
  • Lead vendor evaluations, supplier design reviews, and provide technical support during procurement and panel assembly.
  • Implement and promote best practices for control system cybersecurity, version control, and backup procedures.
  • Provide training and technical guidance to operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Drive continuous improvement by standardizing control libraries, templates, and panel designs for reuse across sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in industrial controls engineering with strong experience in HMI, PLC, and process control panel design and implementation.
  • Proven experience programming PLCs and developing HMIs for process applications; experience with ControlLogix and Allen-Bradley platforms is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus and Ethernet and experience integrating with SCADA/MES platforms (Wonderware, AVEVA, ArchestrA preferred).
  • Familiarity with NEC and UL standards and experience applying them to panel design and installation.
  • Experience with electrical/electronic design tools such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks, and SolidWorks Electrical for panel layout and documentation.
  • Hands-on experience with panel design, wiring schematics, and fabrication oversight.
  • Ability to perform FAT/SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis in production environments.
  • Strong technical writing skills for creating specifications, procedures, and as-built documentation.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and external vendors.
  • Willingness to travel to manufacturing sites for commissioning and support as required.

Benefits

  • Full health coverage with zero deductible and premium for employee-only coverage.

  • 401(k) with 50% company match on first 8% of earnings you contribute.

  • Safe harbor and profit-sharing company contributions to 401(k).

  • Life and AD&D insurance.

  • Short and long-term disability coverage.

  • 4 weeks of PTO plus paid company holidays.

  • Tuition reimbursement.
