What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engine Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engine Engineer, you need strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, thermodynamics, and materials science, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools like ANSYS, and familiarity with industry standards or certifications such as EIT or PE are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this field. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative design and maintenance of engines in various applications.

What are some common challenges faced by engine engineers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Engine engineers often collaborate with professionals from various disciplines, such as electrical engineers, software developers, and project managers. One common challenge is effectively communicating complex technical concepts across different areas of expertise, ensuring everyone is aligned on project goals. Additionally, balancing design constraints—such as performance, cost, and regulatory standards—while working within tight deadlines can be demanding. Successful engine engineers develop strong teamwork and problem-solving skills to navigate these challenges and deliver high-quality results.

What are engine jobs?

Engine jobs typically refer to roles involved in the design, development, maintenance, or operation of engines, which are machines that convert energy into mechanical motion. These positions can be found in industries like automotive, aerospace, marine, and manufacturing. Engine jobs may include engine designers, mechanics, technicians, and engineers who ensure engines function efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations. Duties often involve troubleshooting, repairing, testing, and improving engine systems. Candidates usually need specialized training or education in mechanical engineering or a related field.

What is the difference between Engine vs Mechanic?

AspectEngineMechanic
Required CredentialsEngine certifications, technical trainingAutomotive repair certifications, technical training
Work EnvironmentEngine manufacturing plants, repair shopsAuto repair shops, service centers
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, industrial machineryAutomotive, transportation, machinery repair

The term 'Engine' typically refers to the mechanical component itself or the department responsible for engine design and manufacturing. In contrast, a 'Mechanic' is a professional who repairs and maintains engines and other vehicle parts. While both roles require technical skills, 'Engine' is more about the component or engineering aspect, whereas 'Mechanic' focuses on hands-on repair and maintenance tasks.

Job description

Advanced Turbine Cooling Design Engineer

Beehive Industries is dedicated to Powering American Defense by revolutionizing the design, development, and delivery of jet propulsion systems to support the warfighter. Through the integration of additive manufacturing, the company aims to meet the growing and urgent needs for unmanned aerial defense by dramatically improving a jet engine's speed to market, fuel efficiency, and cost.

Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in Centennial, Colorado, with additional facilities in Knoxville, Tennessee, Loveland Ohio, and Mount Vernon, Ohio. Beehive is committed to grow and advance the defense industrial base while manufacturing exclusively in the USA. This role will be located at our Centennial, Colorado facility, Loveland, Ohio facility, or Remote.

Role Overview

The Advanced Turbine Cooling Design Engineer leads the design and development of advanced cooling solutions for turbine blades and vanes in aviation gas turbine engines. This role is responsible for creating and optimizing cooling architectures, validating designs through analysis and test, and driving solutions from clean-sheet concept through hardware realization. Working closely with cross-functional teams, this engineer translates thermal and flow analysis into durable, manufacturable designs that perform in extreme environments. The role also serves as a technical leader, guiding cooling strategy, solving complex test and field issues, and mentoring junior engineers while advancing the use of additive manufacturing and other modern production methods.

What You'll Do...

  • Lead the design and development of advanced thermal management and cooling solutions for high-performance turbine blades and vanes in aviation gas turbines
  • Develop and optimize 3D cooling architectures (e.g., serpentine passages, impingement arrays, pin-fins) using 1D and 2D tools which you will help develop
  • Design, analyze, and validate film cooling layouts, including hole shape, size, orientation, and pattern distribution, for maximized cooling effectiveness
  • Generate and interpret 1D, 2D, and/or 3D computational models to inform design decisions and drive optimization
  • Specify and select advanced materials and thermal barrier coatings to improve component life and resistance to extreme thermal environments
  • Translate simulation results into actionable design modifications, collaborating closely with cross-functional aerodynamics, structures, materials, and manufacturing teams
  • Develop and execute detailed test plans for validation of cooling schemes, including design and commissioning of test hardware, instrumentation layouts, and measurement techniques (e.g., thermocouples, infrared imaging, flow visualization)
  • Analyze experimental and engine test data to correlate with analytical models; identify and resolve discrepancies
  • Lead root cause investigations of cooling-related issues from engine tests or field operation—propose, prototype, and validate corrective actions
  • Ensure designs are manufacturable and compatible with advanced processing techniques (precision casting, additive manufacturing, laser drilling, etc.)
  • Mentor and guide less-experienced engineers; provide technical leadership on cooling projects from concept through certification
  • Prepare and present technical documentation, reports, and design documentation for internal reviews and customer meetings

You Have...

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university or college
  • At least 8 years of experience in gas turbine component design with a concentration in advanced turbine cooling designs.
  • Experience developing and executing tests for validation of cooling schemes, including design and commissioning of test hardware, instrumentation layouts, and measurement techniques
  • Experience in clean sheet blade and vane cooling design
  • Understanding of turbine cooling methods
  • Experience working with additive manufacturing technologies and familiarity with design for additive manufacturing principles
  • Passion for additive technology and willingness to challenge current design limitations to further exploit the benefits of additive capability
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability and strong program leadership and execution skills
  • Proven self-starter and quick learner who can work in fast-paced cross-functional teams
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issues security clearance is required. U.S. Citizenship is required, as only U.S. Citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Nice to Have...

  • Advanced degree in Engineering in Mechanical or Aerospace
  • Experience having completed multiple cooling designs for new program introductions
  • Experience with overall whole engine secondary flow analysis
