What is an engine programmer?

Engine programmers are specialized software developers who design, build, and maintain the core systems that power video games and other interactive applications. They work on the underlying technology, known as the 'game engine,' enabling graphics rendering, physics, audio, and other essential features. Engine programmers often optimize performance, ensure cross-platform compatibility, and collaborate closely with other developers to create smooth and immersive experiences. Their work is crucial for enabling artists and game designers to bring their creative visions to life efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engine programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engine Programmer, you need strong proficiency in C++ programming, computer graphics, algorithms, and mathematics, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with game engines (such as Unreal or Unity), version control systems, and graphics APIs like DirectX or OpenGL is typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for tackling complex technical challenges and collaborating with other developers. These skills ensure the development of efficient, high-quality game engines that support innovative gameplay and performance.

How does an engine programmer typically collaborate with other departments, such as graphics and gameplay teams, during development?

Engine programmers frequently work closely with both graphics and gameplay teams to ensure that the underlying technology supports creative and performance goals. This involves regular meetings to discuss feature requirements, debugging sessions to resolve integration issues, and ongoing feedback loops to optimize engine components for specific project needs. Clear communication and a collaborative mindset are essential, as engine programmers often translate high-level design or visual ideas into efficient, maintainable code. This cross-functional teamwork is key to delivering smooth, visually impressive, and responsive gameplay experiences.

What is the difference between Engine Programmer vs Graphics Programmer?

Are game engine programmers in demand?

Game engine programmers are in high demand due to the growth of the gaming industry and the need for optimized, real-time graphics and physics engines. Skills in programming languages like C++ and familiarity with tools such as Unreal Engine or Unity are valuable for these roles, which often require a strong understanding of computer graphics and software architecture.

How much do engine programmers make?

Engine programmers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in graphics or physics engines can earn higher salaries, especially in larger companies or tech hubs.

Key responsibilities

  • Define and execute Harvey's organic search strategy across web properties and AI answer layers.

  • Build and maintain an SEO playbook, content calendar, and infrastructure to improve search visibility and extractability.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to monitor, measure, and optimize Harvey's presence and performance in search and AI answer platforms.

Job description

Why Harvey

At Harvey, weโ€™re transforming how legal and professional services operate. By combining frontier agentic AI, an enterprise-grade platform, and deep domain expertise, weโ€™re reshaping how critical knowledge work gets done for decades to come.

This is a rare chance to help build a generational company at a true inflection point. With 1500+ customers in 60+ countries, strong product-market fit, and world-class investor support, weโ€™re scaling fast and defining a new category in real time. The work is ambitious, the bar is high, and the opportunity for growth โ€” personal, professional, and financial โ€” is unmatched.

Our team moves fast, takes ownership, and is deeply committed to the mission โ€” operating with intensity, staying close to our customers, and pushing each other for excellence. We live by three values: Decisiveness, Simplicity, and Job's Not Finished. We act quickly on clear judgment over perfect information, we believe simplicity is what scales, and weโ€™re never satisfied with where we are. If you want to do the best work of your career alongside people who share that drive, we'd love to build with you.

At Harvey, the future of professional services is being written today โ€” and weโ€™re just getting started.

Role Overview

We're hiring our first dedicated SEO / GEO Lead. You will own Harvey's visibility across both traditional search (Google, Bing) and the fast-growing AI answer layer: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Claude, and emerging agentic interfaces.

This is a high-ownership individual-contributor role with a clear path to building a team. You'll define the roadmap, set the standards, and execute - partnering closely with content, product marketing, web, engineering, and data to make Harvey the authoritative answer wherever our buyers are looking.

The person who succeeds here is not an SEO purist and not an GEO theorist - they're someone who understands that both disciplines are now inseparable, and who can build the infrastructure and content strategy that wins in both worlds.

What You'll Do

Own Harvey's Organic Search Strategy

  • Define and execute the SEO strategy and roadmap across harvey.ai and all Harvey web properties, balancing quick wins with compounding investments.
  • Build and maintain an SEO playbook: processes, templates, and guardrails, that scales content production without sacrificing quality or search integrity.
  • Own the content calendar for SEO-driven pieces in partnership with content, PMM, engineers, spanning buyer journey stages from awareness to purchase.
  • Develop and own Harvey's AEO / GEO strategy: ensure Harvey is consistently cited, referenced, and surfaced when our buyers query AI answer engines.
  • Implement entity consistency across all Harvey web properties and optimize content for extractability.
  • Partner with thought leadership to grow Harvey's LLM citation footprint with earned mentions.
  • Build a monitoring infrastructure to track Harvey's presence and accuracy in AI-generated answers across major platforms.
  • Partner with engineering on web infrastructure decisions that affect crawlability and indexing
  • Establish SEO observability: automated alerting for ranking drops, crawl anomalies, indexing failures, and Core Web Vitals regressions.

Analytics, Measurement & Experimentation

  • Build and own analytics that track organic performance: from keyword rankings and impressions to pipeline attribution.
  • Design and run controlled SEO and CRO experiments with statistical rigor; translate results into recommendations and report findings to leadership.
  • Develop a measurement framework for AEO.
  • Connect organic performance to revenue outcomes: pipeline, demo requests, trial signups, and attributed ARR.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Collaborate with engineering on infrastructure and platform decisions that affect search performance.
  • Partner with content, PMM, and design to embed SEO and AEO best practices into the content creation workflow from the start.
  • Present SEO/AEO strategy, roadmap, and performance to marketing leadership and company stakeholders
  • Proactively identify and scope opportunities to grow the function
What You Have

Required

  • 8+ years of hands-on SEO experience, with demonstrable and measurable results.
  • Recent, dedicated focus on AEO / GEO: you have built a program or owned a meaningful AEO workstream.
  • B2B SaaS background required: you understand enterprise buyer journeys, long sales cycles, and how to map content to pipeline, not just traffic.
  • Deep technical SEO fluency.
  • Proficiency with core SEO/GEO tools.
  • Familiarity with experimentation platforms (Statsig, Optimizely, or similar) and a working understanding of A/B test design and statistical significance.
  • Experience with international SEO and hreflang implementation (Harvey operates globally).
  • Data-driven mindset with the ability to turn analytics into prioritized action
  • Strong cross-functional communication
  • High agency and growth mindset
Compensation

$196,000 - $294,000 USD
