Description

We are seeking to add a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Transportation Project Engineer to join our growing team.
As a Senior Transportation Project Engineer, you'll play a key role in delivering complex, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects. You'll have the opportunity to oversee every phase, from conceptual planning to final design and construction support. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil and highway engineering, familiarity with DOT standards, and a passion for designing safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems. In addition to technical responsibilities, this role includes mentoring and supporting junior engineering staff, fostering a culture of learning and professional growth within the team.
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and steer the design of highway and roadway projects, including geometric design, grading, drainage, traffic control, and pavement design
  • Develop and review engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports
  • Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal transportation design standards (AASHTO, FHWA, ConnDOT/RIDOT/MassDOT guidelines)
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including structural, traffic, environmental, and structural engineers
  • Provide technical support during project development, permitting, bidding, and construction phases
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables under the guidance of a project manager
  • Track project milestones and assist in maintaining budgets and schedules
  • Coordinate with clients, agencies, and stakeholders; represent BETA while attending project meetings and public presentations
  • Assist with proposal development and business development initiatives as needed
  • Mentor junior staff and support quality assurance/quality control efforts

Preferred location is BETA's Worcester, MA office. Candidates should have flexibility to work from our other office locations. BETA also offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing employees to request working remotely up to 2 days per week.

Requirements
Required Experience/Skills :
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or related field
  • 8 to 15 years of related engineering experience in highway design, stormwater management, ADA compliance, and roadway construction practices
  • Proficient with AutoCAD Civil3D
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with MUTCD, AASHTO, ConnDOT/RIDOT/MassDOT design standards
  • Experience with MassDEP and CRMC permitting regulations
  • Strong technical aptitude and an eagerness to learn
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
  • Must be able to collect field data and measurements including but not limited to roadway, sidewalk, and utility assets; and perform asset inspections
  • Must be able to lift/move objects weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Must be able to perform field work in both hot and cold weather (rain and/or snow)
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
