To thrive in Energy Optimization, you need a solid background in energy systems, data analysis, and engineering practices, typically supported by a degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with energy management software, building automation systems, and certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, project management abilities, and effective communication help professionals excel in collaborative and client-facing environments. These skills are crucial for identifying energy-saving opportunities, implementing cost-effective solutions, and achieving sustainability targets within organizations.
Professionals in Energy Optimization typically spend their days analyzing energy usage data, identifying inefficiencies, and developing strategies to reduce energy consumption across facilities or processes. They often collaborate with engineering teams, facility managers, and external contractors to implement improvements, monitor system performance, and ensure compliance with sustainability goals. The role also involves preparing reports, presenting findings to stakeholders, and staying updated on emerging technologies and regulations. This hands-on, data-driven position is ideal for those who enjoy problem-solving and working toward measurable environmental and cost-saving outcomes.
An Energy Optimization job focuses on improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, and optimizing energy consumption in buildings, industrial processes, or systems. Professionals in this role analyze energy usage, implement cost-effective strategies, and utilize technologies such as smart meters and automation to enhance efficiency. They may work with renewable energy sources, perform audits, and recommend sustainable practices. The goal is to reduce costs, lower environmental impact, and ensure compliance with regulations.

Metro Water Recovery in Denver, CO - a nationally recognized leader among clean water utilities, provides wastewater conveyance and treatment services for more than 2 million people in the Denver Metro area. At Metro, we help you be your best so we can do our best. You will join a team that offers stability, flexibility, and the opportunity to make a difference.
We take pride in being part of an industry-leading team who serves the community by protecting the region's health and environment. Description Why It's a Great Opportunity We are seeking an innovative and motivated engineer to help shape the future of energy at one of the nation's leading wastewater utilities. This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of projects involving renewable natural gas (RNG), wastewater thermal energy, renewable energy development, energy optimization, greenhouse gas reduction, and resource recovery.
As Metro continues expanding its enterprise energy program, you will play an important role in evaluating, developing, implementing, and optimizing energy-related infrastructure and initiatives that support the organization's strategic priorities. You'll work alongside other Metro departments, utilities, and industry partners to solve complex challenges and advance innovative solutions. This is a unique opportunity to help build an emerging energy program rather than simply maintain an existing one.
Your work will directly influence how Metro generates, recovers, manages, and commercializes energy while improving operational efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing resiliency, and creating long-term value for the organization and its ratepayers. Why It's a Great Department The Energy Engineer is part of Metro's Technology & Innovation Department (TID), a multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving Metro's operations through innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
