Energy Modelling information

How much does energy modeling cost?

The cost of energy modeling for professionals in the field typically ranges from $1,000 to $10,000 per project, depending on the complexity, size, and scope of the building or system being analyzed. Fees may also vary based on experience, tools used, and geographic location. Some projects may require specialized software and certifications, which can influence overall costs.

What is energy modelling?

Energy modelling is the process of creating mathematical representations of energy systems to analyze their performance, efficiency, and environmental impact. It is commonly used in building design, urban planning, and energy policy to predict future energy consumption, optimize system design, and evaluate the potential of renewable energy sources. Energy modellers use specialized software to simulate factors like heating, cooling, lighting, and equipment usage, helping stakeholders make informed decisions about energy management and sustainability.

What does an energy modeler do?

An energy modeler develops and analyzes models to evaluate the energy performance of buildings, systems, or infrastructure. They use software tools like EnergyPlus or eQuest to simulate energy consumption, identify efficiency improvements, and support sustainable design decisions. Strong analytical skills and knowledge of building systems are essential for this role.

What is the difference between Energy Modelling vs Energy Analyst?

AspectEnergy ModellingEnergy Analyst
Required CredentialsDegree in engineering, environmental science, or related field; certifications like LEED AP or energy modeling software trainingDegree in similar fields; certifications may include energy auditing or data analysis
Work EnvironmentTypically in engineering firms, consulting companies, or energy agencies; focused on technical modelingIn corporate, government, or consulting settings; involves data analysis and reporting
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by engineers, consultants, and architects for building performance and energy efficiency projectsEmployed by energy companies, government agencies, and consultancies for energy management and policy analysis

While both roles involve energy data, Energy Modelling focuses on creating detailed simulations of energy systems, whereas Energy Analysts interpret data to inform decisions. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in technical depth and scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Energy Modeller, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Energy Modeller, you need a solid background in engineering, mathematics, or environmental science, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with energy modelling software such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, or IES VE, and knowledge of relevant certifications like LEED or ASHRAE standards are typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams are essential soft skills. These competencies are critical for accurately predicting energy performance, optimizing building efficiency, and meeting sustainability goals.

What are the highest paying jobs in energy?

In energy modeling, senior roles such as Energy Manager, Energy Director, or Lead Energy Analyst tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures with experience and advanced certifications. Specialized positions involving renewable energy project development, grid integration, or energy consultancy also command high compensation, especially in industries with complex technical requirements and regulatory knowledge.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in energy modelling roles, and how can they be addressed?

Energy modelling professionals often encounter challenges such as handling large and complex datasets, ensuring the accuracy of input assumptions, and adapting models to new technologies or regulatory requirements. Collaborating closely with engineers, architects, and policymakers is essential to gather reliable data and keep models relevant. Staying current with industry software, continuous learning, and participating in professional networks can help address these challenges and improve model robustness.

How to do energy modelling?

Energy modelling involves creating computational simulations of a building or system’s energy use using specialized software such as EnergyPlus, eQuest, or IES VE. The process includes gathering data on building design, climate, and usage patterns, then developing a model to analyze energy consumption, identify efficiency opportunities, and support decision-making. Skills in data analysis, building physics, and familiarity with relevant standards are essential for energy modellers.

Job description

You’ll become the go-to expert on renewable energy tax credits, shaping strategy that directly boosts cash flow and drives compliance across major solar and energy projects.

You’ll gain long-term job security in a rapidly expanding sector, with the chance to increase your scope and influence as the business grows. You’ll also enjoy a remote working arrangement, with approximately 30% travel to connect with teams and projects on the ground.

As you develop your expertise with us in the role, you’ll be recognized and rewarded with progression, professional development and full health benefits to give you peace of mind.

What you’ll do

You’ll lead the qualification, compliance and reporting for key renewable energy tax credits like ITC, PTC and 45X manufacturing credits. This is where your technical knowledge will shine, as you build audit-ready documentation and track project eligibility in detail.

Working closely with legal, finance and treasury teams, you’ll help monetize these credits through strategies like transferability and direct pay. You’ll also advise project teams on the tax implications of procurement, phasing and safe harboring, ensuring maximum value across the portfolio.

Staying ahead of IRS, Treasury and state-level guidance, you’ll interpret new regulations and communicate their impact to senior leadership and project teams. You’ll also train internal teams in engineering, procurement and operations to keep everyone aligned.

Additionally, you’ll support tax filings, credit calculations, depreciation schedules and manage audits or inquiries, maintaining accuracy and compliance throughout the project lifecycle.

What you’ll need

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA required. Master’s preferred.

7+ years of tax experience focused on renewable energy, infrastructure, project finance, or energy tax credits.

Deep expertise in ITC, PTC, 45X, and other renewable energy incentive programs.

Experience in solar, energy development, manufacturing of solar components, or utility-scale energy environments.

Strong technical knowledge of IRS guidance, renewable energy tax policy, and regulatory compliance frameworks.

Exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills for credit valuation and financial modelling will also set you apart.
