Energy Modelling information

What is energy modelling?

Energy modelling is the process of creating mathematical representations of energy systems to analyze their performance, efficiency, and environmental impact. It is commonly used in building design, urban planning, and energy policy to predict future energy consumption, optimize system design, and evaluate the potential of renewable energy sources. Energy modellers use specialized software to simulate factors like heating, cooling, lighting, and equipment usage, helping stakeholders make informed decisions about energy management and sustainability.

What is the difference between Energy Modelling vs Energy Analyst?

AspectEnergy ModellingEnergy Analyst
Required CredentialsDegree in engineering, environmental science, or related field; certifications like LEED AP or energy modeling software trainingDegree in similar fields; certifications may include energy auditing or data analysis
Work EnvironmentTypically in engineering firms, consulting companies, or energy agencies; focused on technical modelingIn corporate, government, or consulting settings; involves data analysis and reporting
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by engineers, consultants, and architects for building performance and energy efficiency projectsEmployed by energy companies, government agencies, and consultancies for energy management and policy analysis

While both roles involve energy data, Energy Modelling focuses on creating detailed simulations of energy systems, whereas Energy Analysts interpret data to inform decisions. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in technical depth and scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy modeller, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Energy Modeller, you need a solid background in engineering, mathematics, or environmental science, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with energy modelling software such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, or IES VE, and knowledge of relevant certifications like LEED or ASHRAE standards are typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams are essential soft skills. These competencies are critical for accurately predicting energy performance, optimizing building efficiency, and meeting sustainability goals.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in energy modelling roles, and how can they be addressed?

Energy modelling professionals often encounter challenges such as handling large and complex datasets, ensuring the accuracy of input assumptions, and adapting models to new technologies or regulatory requirements. Collaborating closely with engineers, architects, and policymakers is essential to gather reliable data and keep models relevant. Staying current with industry software, continuous learning, and participating in professional networks can help address these challenges and improve model robustness.

If it isn't grown, it's mined. Our mining and metals teams help our clients to safely and sustainably mine the minerals and metals used in our everyday lives. Want to play a part of innovating and optimizing the mining life cycle on greenfield and brownfield facilities?

We have an exciting opening for an experienced Senior Minerals Processing Engineer to join our team on a full-time basis. You will be given the opportunity to work in collaboration with both internal staff and our clients to provide effective execution, coordination and supervision of mining, minerals processing and geometallurgical laboratory and fieldwork.

You will become involved in a wide variety of Projects - from brownfield optimisation, expansion studies to greenfield.

This role will involve execution, coordination and supervision of mining, minerals processing and geometallurgical laboratory and site/fieldwork, execution of technical reports and engineering documentation, identification of project opportunities, mathematical modelling, simulation (in comminution and flotation areas extended to understanding and integration with drill and blast, throughput forecasting and geometallurgy), field test work for integration and optimisation of existing mining and minerals processing operations, expansion studies and greenfield - design projects.

We are looking for someone with good communication skills as writing technical reports and completion of engineering documentation for our customers will be a key part of this role.

Other duties and responsibilities of the role may include:
  • Assist with implementation of projects train, liaise with internal Hatch engineers and clients in the region on Hatch Australia technology, methodology, mathematical models and tools/systems for Mine to Process Integration and Optimisation.
  • Execution, coordination and supervision of laboratory and fieldwork
  • Write technical reports and engineering documentation
  • Process optimisation โ€“ ore characterisation, drill and blasting, crushing, grinding, flotation, concentration
  • Process flowsheet development, equipment sizing and selection, circuit design, process flow diagrams (PFD) and process instrumentation diagrams (PID) development and review
  • Mining and process support during commissioning of new circuits and expansions,
