What does an energy modeler do?

An Energy Modeler analyzes and simulates a building's energy performance to optimize efficiency and sustainability. They use software tools to create models that predict energy consumption, HVAC performance, lighting efficiency, and renewable energy integration. Their work helps inform design decisions, meet energy codes, and achieve certifications like LEED. Energy Modelers often collaborate with architects, engineers, and policymakers to develop energy-efficient buildings and systems.

What does a typical day look like for an energy modeler?

A typical day for an Energy Modeler involves developing and running energy simulations for buildings, interpreting data to assess energy performance, and preparing detailed reports or recommendations. You’ll frequently collaborate with architects, engineers, and project managers to incorporate design changes and optimize building systems for efficiency. Regular tasks also include reviewing project documentation, verifying compliance with energy codes, and addressing queries from project stakeholders. This blend of independent analysis and teamwork helps drive successful and sustainable building projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the energy modeler position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Energy Modeler, you need a strong background in engineering, mathematics, or building science, along with expertise in energy modeling concepts and data analysis. Familiarity with simulation tools such as eQUEST, EnergyPlus, and IES VE, as well as knowledge of relevant codes (ASHRAE, LEED) and certifications like CEM or BEMP, is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders are valuable soft skills. These attributes enable Energy Modelers to provide accurate simulations, ensure compliance, and support energy-efficient building projects.

Job description

Join us in our mission to commercialize fusion energy
About Type One Energy
Type One Energy Group is mission-driven to provide sustainable, affordable fusion power to the world. Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023, the company is led by a team of globally recognized fusion scientists with a strong track record of building state-of-the-art stellarator fusion machines, together with veteran business leaders experienced in scaling companies and commercializing energy technologies.
If you are searching for the best new ideas and share our vision, join us as a Computational Physicist-MHD Reconstruction. This is what you need to know:
Location: Knoxville TN, Madison WI or Vancouver BC
Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits
Contract: Permanent, full time
Reporting to: VP Stellarator Optimization
Your role in the mission:
We are seeking a Computational Physicist to develop and advance an integrated, multi-fidelity MHD-Edge-Divertor modeling framework that supports optimization, stability analysis, equilibrium reconstruction, synthetic diagnostics, and real-time plasma control. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of high-performance simulation tools and predictive modeling capabilities that enable deeper understanding of stellarator plasma behavior and inform key engineering and physics decisions.
This role is critical to the success of our Infinity Two stellarator technology, with direct impact on system design, operational control strategies, and scenario development. Working at the intersection of computational physics, plasma science, and fusion engineering, the individual will help shape the performance and evolution of both Infinity One and Infinity Two programs, accelerating the path toward commercially viable fusion energy.
This role delivers the core physics-based modeling and control capability enabling between-shot analysis, real-time plasma optimization, AI-enhanced physics validation, and integrated design of diagnostics and control systems for next-generation stellarators.
Responsibilities
Critical Priority (Infinity Two) - Real-Time Equilibrium Reconstruction
  • Develop a real-time 3-D equilibrium reconstruction solution for stellarator plasmas.
  • Integrate accelerated equilibrium solvers with diagnostics, actuators, and control systems.
  • Support MHD and divertor heat-flux and particle control.
  • Provide input for high fidelity models for physics validation.

Physics-Informed & Proxy Models
  • Work with engineering and physics to create high-quality accelerated (proxy) models for:
  • Core MHD + edge/divertor coupling
  • Heat and particle flux (SOL, divertor, pumping)
  • Neutron fluence
  • Energetic particles
  • Combined MHD and neoclassical bootstrap current

Synthetic Diagnostics, Hardware & Controls
  • Implement synthetic diagnostics (magnetics, spectroscopy, bolometry, pressure, fueling, input power, neutron diagnostics) with support from engineers and diagnosticians.
  • Support diagnostic and control system design, including magnetic sensors, spectroscopy and fluctuation diagnostics.
  • Work with CODAC to define data structures and access for real-time and offline analysis.

What you'll need:
  • Familiarity with equilibrium reconstruction tools for magnetic fusion. Familiarity with existing reconstruction tools for stellarators is highly desired.
  • Working in a shared development workspace: Git, github, gitlab, or some other file management system
  • Numerical modeling with one or more of the following: Python, C/C++, Fortran
  • Familiarity with *nix, High-Performance and/or GPU computing: Bash, Slurm, MPI, OpenMP, JAX, Cuda
  • Familiarity with real-time control systems for fusion devices.
  • Handling large data sets. Working with engineers to reduce data set sizes.
  • Generating reports and shared documents with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and various online collaborative tools (Confluence.

We offer:
In addition to a basic salary and yearly bonus, you will also get...
  • A hybrid work policy
  • Stock options
  • Relocation allowance
  • Insurance plans
  • Retirement options
  • And many more great voluntary benefits
