What does an energy management engineer do?

An Energy Management Engineer is responsible for analyzing, designing, and implementing strategies to improve energy efficiency in buildings, industrial facilities, or infrastructure. They assess energy usage patterns, identify opportunities for energy savings, and recommend cost-effective solutions such as upgrading equipment or optimizing processes. Their work often involves conducting energy audits, monitoring energy consumption, and ensuring compliance with energy regulations. Ultimately, they help organizations reduce energy costs and environmental impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy management engineer?

To thrive as an Energy Management Engineer, you need a strong background in energy systems, engineering principles, and data analysis, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, electrical, or energy engineering. Familiarity with energy modeling software, building automation systems, and relevant certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications enable accurate energy assessments, effective project implementation, and successful teamwork to optimize energy use and reduce costs.

What are some common challenges faced by energy management engineers when implementing energy-saving initiatives in organizations?

Energy Management Engineers often face challenges such as balancing cost-effectiveness with sustainability goals, overcoming resistance to change from staff, and ensuring compliance with evolving regulations. Job description

The EMS team is looking for a SCADA Engineer to own the core configuration of our SCADA platform in Ignition, primarily tag structures, UDT setup, and communication with field devices. This person will support the HMI team and the controls team by developing tools that speed up SCADA configuration, deployment, and ongoing support of our current and evolving SCADA solution across battery energy storage systems (BESS) and grid connected assets.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Configure and maintain SCADA tags, UDTs (User Defined Types), and device connections in Ignition, ensuring a consistent and scalable foundation across sites.
  • Design and maintain MQTT based communication for SCADA, including broker configuration, topic structure, and integration with Ignition.
  • Integrate SCADA systems with PLCs and other field devices across BESS and grid connected inverter topologies, using protocols such as MQTT, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, and DNP3.
  • Build and maintain tools that support the HMI team, such as automated UDT and tag generation, configuration templates, and data validation utilities.
  • Build and maintain tools that support the controls team, such as scripts for point checkout, configuration comparison, and deployment automation.
  • Identify and implement improvements to the efficiency, performance, and reliability of the current SCADA configuration and deployment process as it continues to develop and scale.
  • Troubleshoot SCADA and communication issues in both development and live production environments, including field support as needed.
  • Support commissioning activities, including point to point checkout, alarm validation, and system testing.
  • Document SCADA configuration standards, tag maps, and MQTT topic structures to support long term maintainability.
  • Participate in the ongoing development of company alarm management and SCADA standards.
  • Design and maintain scalable SCADA architectures across OT, DMZ, and Cloud environments, including Ignition
  • Gateway Network, Remote Tag Providers, MQTT infrastructure, and historian integrations.
  • Participate in architecture reviews and propose improvements that increase system reliability, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Analyze and optimize SCADA performance, including tag execution rates, historian throughput, Gateway
  • Network traffic, database performance, MQTT publish rates, and overall system resource utilization.
  • Perform root cause analysis for latency, communication bottlenecks, and data quality issues across distributed SCADA systems.
  • Design, configure, and validate redundant SCADA architectures, including Ignition redundancy, redundant MQTT brokers, historian failover, and communication resiliency.
  • Execute disaster recovery and failover testing procedures to ensure high system availability.
  • Design and maintain historical data strategies using Ignition Tag Historian and SQL databases.
  • Optimize historian storage, retention policies, data compression, and historical query performance.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 - 5 years of hands on experience with Ignition, including tag configuration, UDT setup, device connections, and scripting.
  • Experience with the Vision or Perspective modules is a plus but not the focus of this role.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as MQTT, Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, or DNP3.
  • Experience building or maintaining scripts or tools that support configuration, deployment, or validation of SCADA systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across both software and field level hardware issues.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document technical work for both technical and non technical audiences.

PREFERRED

  • Understanding of PLC based control systems and the ability to read and interpret control logic.
  • Familiarity with Siemens PLC platforms.
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) or renewable energy assets.
  • Experience with SQL databases and historian systems.
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps or similar work tracking tools for engineering documentation and issue management.
  • Knowledge of alarm management standards such as ISA 18.2.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus, given cross functional coordination with regional teams.
