What is end user testing?

An End User Testing (UAT) job involves evaluating software, applications, or systems from the perspective of the end user to ensure they meet business requirements and function as intended. Professionals in this role create test cases, execute testing scenarios, document defects, and provide feedback to developers and stakeholders. They help identify usability issues, functionality gaps, and overall user experience concerns before final deployment. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and communication abilities are essential for success in this role.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities for someone in end user testing?

In an End User Testing role, your daily responsibilities may include creating and executing test cases based on product requirements, documenting defects and usability issues, and working closely with developers to verify resolutions. You'll often participate in feedback sessions, report findings to project managers, and help ensure the product meets real-world user expectations before release. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including design and support, is also common. This variety keeps the role engaging and allows you to make a significant impact on the final user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in end user testing, and why are they important?

To thrive in End User Testing, you need a strong understanding of software functionality, attention to detail, and an ability to identify usability issues, typically supported by experience in quality assurance or user acceptance testing. Familiarity with bug tracking tools (such as JIRA), test management systems, and knowledge of test case creation are commonly required, and certifications like ISTQB can be advantageous. Excellent communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset help you effectively interact with developers and stakeholders. These expertise ensure you can provide valuable user-centric feedback, detect issues early, and contribute to delivering high-quality, user-friendly products.

How do I become an end user tester?

To become an end user tester, you typically need good communication skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with the software or product being tested. Many roles require basic computer knowledge and the ability to follow testing instructions, often using testing tools or platforms. Some positions may require prior experience or certifications in quality assurance or software testing.

Key responsibilities

  • own the design process from user testing to implementation and beyond

  • drive and evangelize best practices for design

  • facilitate a clean handoff of design work to engineers

Job description

Lead Designer

LeftLane is looking for our 1st founding designer for our B2B vSaaS app in the used car space.ย It is LeftLane's mission to become the operating system for the 70k independent used car dealerships across the nation.

LeftLane helps independent dealerships manage the lifecycle of their inventory, secure financing for their customers, keep accounting records, comply with regulations, and learn more about their business.

This is an opportunity to get significant equity, significant responsibility, and ultimately, build a product that enables small businesses to serve ~40 million used car buyers every year. Here is some background context on theย company.

Responsibilities

As our first designer, you'll be owning design end-to-end, working directly with the CEO & CTO to drive UX, and will interact directly with customers to gather feedback. You'll have a loud voice in driving early decisions.

You'll need to:

  • own design from user testing to implementation and beyond
  • drive and evangelize best practices for design
  • facilitate a clean handoff to engineers

This will be a good fit if you:

  • think an early-stage startup would be fun
  • are excited about the upside potential
  • are ambitious i.e. want to run your own team or be a founder yourself in the future
  • take ownership of problems i.e. will do what needs to be done
  • you like being rewarded directly for your high output

This will not be a good fit if:

  • you want to specialize strongly in one area
  • you cannot iterate quickly
  • cannot take ownership and initiative
The Design Stack

We currently use:

  • notion to capture docs
  • whimsical for early wire frames and flow charts
  • figma for user testing
  • storybook for eng. handoff
Logistics
  • Full time only
  • Onsite/Remote:ย We prefer a flexible onsite model. Given how early we are we believe it will let us move the fastest and collaborate the smoothest.
  • Hours: At the end of the day what matters is the work and so you'll control your hours (if you need to WFH for X reason or swap aย Mondayย for aย Saturdayย or XYZ you can do that as long as expectations for work are being met), but we expect someย minimumย overlapย with the team to make collaboration flow, 4/5 days a week 10 - 4 in the office would be a reasonable base
Benefits
  • competitive salary
  • significant equity granted as RSAs (this is a big deal, ask us about it!)
  • 100% paid high tier health / vision / dental plans (ultra premium 90% covered)
  • unlimited paid time off
  • 11 paid company holidays
