What is an EMR project manager?

An EMR Project Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems within healthcare organizations. Their duties include coordinating teams, ensuring project timelines are met, managing budgets, and facilitating communication between stakeholders such as clinicians, IT staff, and vendors. They play a critical role in ensuring that the EMR system is integrated smoothly, meets regulatory standards, and improves workflow efficiency. Strong organizational, technical, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMR project manager?

To thrive as an EMR Project Manager, you need expertise in healthcare project management, understanding of electronic medical records (EMR) systems, and typically a degree in health informatics, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with EMR platforms like Epic or Cerner, project management software (such as MS Project or Jira), and certifications like PMP or Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) are often required. Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills help facilitate collaboration among clinical, technical, and administrative teams. These competencies are critical for ensuring smooth EMR implementations, minimizing disruptions, and achieving project goals within healthcare environments.

What are some common challenges faced by EMR project managers during system implementation?

EMR Project Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning stakeholder expectations, ensuring data migration accuracy, and managing resistance to change among clinical staff. Coordinating between IT teams, hospital administrators, and end-users can be complex, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Additionally, balancing strict regulatory compliance with project timelines and budget constraints is a frequent hurdle. Successfully navigating these challenges is key to delivering a seamless EMR implementation and adoption.

Job description

At Bluesight, our mission is to create groundbreaking solutions that increase efficiency, safety and visibility for health systems, hospital pharmacy, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. We empower our customers to deliver the right medicine to the right patient at the right time, every time. We are a high growth healthcare information technology company with a start-up 'vibe' but over 3000 customers using our proven solutions.

Bluesight is seeking a Technical Project Manager to lead high-value and integration projects for our hospital customers. This role sits at the intersection of hands-on technical work and strategic project management: you'll be the primary point of contact for customers, own the data integration and infrastructure work that gets them live, and coordinate internal technical and business teams to deliver a seamless experience.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical aptitude (scripting, data validation, healthcare systems integration) with the polish and judgment needed to manage relationships with clinicians, IT leaders, and executive stakeholders. You're comfortable operating in ambiguity, translating between technical and non-technical audiences, and driving projects to completion under pressure.

Representative Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, forming trusted relationships with clinicians, IT stakeholders, and executive sponsors
  • Own and manage complex, technical implementation and integration projects from kickoff through go-live, coordinating internal technical resources and
  • external customer technical teams
  • Consult with customer technical teams on how to properly extract, transform, and load data (EMR, ADC, and other source systems) into the Bluesight platform
  • Validate, reconcile, and analyze data from disparate systems using command-line tools and scripts to ensure data integrity
  • Act as an escalation point for issues that go beyond basic support, requiring longer-term coordination of technical resources across teams
  • Set clear, realistic expectations with clients, manage timelines and risk, and ensure consistent follow-through
  • Provide regular updates to management and executive stakeholders on project status, milestones, and results
  • Produce technical procedures, integration documentation, and best-practice guides for new and existing applications
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Implementation, Product, and Engineering to improve processes, enhance data pipelines, and inform the product roadmap with customer feedback
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • 4+ years of professional experience in a client-facing role, including direct customer support or project management
  • 2-4+ years of project management experience managing technical projects
  • Experience with relational or non-relational databases (e.g., MySQL, MS-SQL, Oracle, MongoDB)
  • Ability to build trusting, communicative, and results-oriented relationships with customer stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences
  • Advanced Excel skills for large data sets, including pivot tables
  • Ability to adapt to change, think quickly, work independently, and manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines
  • High attention to detail and strong problem-solving/troubleshooting skills
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in the healthcare industry, especially with hospital EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner/Oracle Health, MEDITECH) or ADC systems (e.g., Omnicell, Pyxis)
  • Experience with AWS services (e.g., AWS Glue, Step Functions, Lambda) or other cloud data infrastructure
  • Experience coding in Python, Ruby, or another scripting language
  • Experience working with PHI and familiarity with HIPAA requirements
  • Prior experience on an Operations or Implementation team, especially deploying
  • SaaS products in client environments
  • Track record managing relationships with large, complex, or strategically important customer accounts
