Actual starting salary will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, and internal equity considerations. Summary
The Campus Wellness Manager leads the development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of Howard Community College's comprehensive employee wellness strategy. Housed in Human Resources, the position works collaboratively with departments and offices throughout the College to identify employee wellness needs, coordinate institutional resources, and integrate wellness initiatives with broader workforce and organizational priorities. The position exercises substantial discretion in establishing annual priorities, selecting evidence-informed programming, managing vendors and resources, evaluating outcomes, and advising senior leadership. The Manager also directly delivers selected employee wellness programs, workshops, demonstrations, and group activities consistent with the incumbent's qualifications.
Essential Role Responsibilities
  • Leads the development and execution of a comprehensive, college-wide wellness strategy serving the college's diverse employee community.
  • Assesses institutional wellness needs; establishes annual priorities, goals, programming standards, and an integrated calendar of offerings.
  • Directly delivers selected employee wellness programs, workshops, demonstrations, and group activities in areas consistent with the incumbent's qualifications and the College's established wellness priorities.
  • Exercises discretion in selecting evidence-informed interventions, delivery methods, vendors, instructors, and community partners.
  • Manages the wellness budget and vendor portfolio; develops scopes of work, evaluates proposals, monitors performance, and recommends continuation, modification, or termination of services.
  • Builds partnerships across College departments and offices to integrate employee wellness into workforce practices, organizational culture, and institutional operations. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with departments and offices throughout the College, including Benefits, Talent Development, Public Safety, Risk Management, Facilities, and other appropriate institutional partners, to coordinate employee wellness initiatives, align resources, support workforce needs, and avoid duplication of services.
  • Develops communications, campaigns, and engagement strategies to expand participation among diverse employee populations.
  • Establishes metrics, analyzes participation and outcomes, prepares leadership reports, and recommends policy, programming, and resource changes.
  • Identifies grants, sponsorships, and partnerships that may expand wellness capacity and coordinates related proposals when appropriate.
  • Ensures programming complies with applicable safety, accessibility, privacy, credentialing, procurement, labor-relations, and risk-management requirements.
  • Provides education and referral rather than clinical diagnosis or treatment unless separately licensed and expressly authorized.
  • Performs other strategic, administrative, and operational responsibilities related to employee wellness and workforce well-being as assigned, consistent with the scope of the position and applicable College policies, contractual obligations, collective bargaining agreements, and assigned departmental responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in health education, health promotion, public health, exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, nutrition, counseling, organizational wellness, human resources, or a related field.
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience developing, coordinating, or delivering wellness, health-education, employee-engagement, staff/organizational development, or community health programs.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating classes, workshops, or group activities.
  • Demonstrated experience exercising independent judgment in program design, vendor selection, resource allocation, assessment, and organizational recommendations.
  • Strong presentation, written communication, event coordination, relationship-building, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends, based on programming needs.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate certifications for any physical activity or specialized program personally delivered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience in a college, university, public-sector, or comparably complex employer environment.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES/MCHES), health and wellness coach credential, group-fitness certification, nutrition-related credential, or other relevant professional certification.
  • Current CPR/AED certification and training in trauma-informed practice, Mental Health First Aid, or similar evidence-based programs.
  • Experience using data and participant feedback to evaluate and improve programs.
  • Experience managing a program budget, contractors, consultants, or a network of instructors.
  • Experience advising executive leadership and leading cross-functional committees or initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of multidimensional wellness, health-promotion principles, adult learning, employee engagement, and inclusive program design.
  • Ability to establish credibility and engage employees across varied backgrounds, roles, schedules, and ability levels.
  • Ability to distinguish educational wellness programming from clinical, therapeutic, or medical services and to make appropriate referrals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations.
  • Proficiency with standard office, presentation, registration, communication, and data-tracking tools.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications Physical Demand Summary
This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position. The work schedule will vary based on College programming and operational needs and may include early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends. The incumbent will generally adjust the schedule within the same workweek to support programs offered outside standard business hours. Regular on-campus presence is required during scheduled wellness programs and events.

Howard Community College offers competitive salaries, excellent medical and dental selections, tuition reimbursement and paid leave programs. As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
