Job description

Are you an experienced clinician (Nursing, OT or PT background) who has a passion for staff development and education? Windward Life Care is seeking an HCA Development Manager (30 hours per week) to join our team! We are honored to be a San Diego Union-Tribune Top Workplaces award winner for seven years running, 2019-2025.
Proudly serving San Diego County for 22 years, Windward Life Care is a group of trusted Aging Life Care ® and in-home care professionals with a premier reputation in our field. We offer geriatric care management services and non-medical home care services to clients who are billed on a private-pay basis. Our mission is to improve the lives of older and disabled adults in San Diego County by fostering a lifelong sense of purpose and maximizing independence.
Reporting to the Vice President, Operations, the HCA Development Manager assumes overall responsibility for all Home Care Aide ("HCA") training programs, clinical skill evaluation and performance supervision. This role ensures that training content is clear and helpful, presentation is engaging, structure and coordination is efficient and effective, and performance follow-up is consistent and appropriate.
Responsibilities include:
  • Ensure the learning material and structure of Windward Academy and Compass Care training programs prepare new HCAs for success in their roles, including:
    • Develop curriculum and evaluation system for HCA skills, including proper body mechanics for transferring and repositioning clients, activities of daily living (ADLs), personal/incontinence care, and managing challenging behaviors related to common client conditions (such as dementia)
    • Create a welcoming, interactive environment in which HCAs can learn
    • Present material in a clear, engaging style
    • Organize teaching schedule
    • Collaborate with HR, Staffing, Clinical, and other internal team members to ensure sessions run smoothly
  • Act as the direct supervisor for all Home Care Aides (currently, approximately 100), collaborating with Care Managers and HR and Staffing Departments to manage performance, participate in coachings and performance reviews, build positive working relationships and support employee retention efforts
  • Evaluate HCA clinical skills upon hire, including proper body mechanics for transferring/repositioning clients, ADLs, personal/incontinence care, and managing challenging behaviors related to common client conditions (such as dementia)
  • Select and assign ongoing online HCA training sessions in compliance with current Home Care Services Bureau (HCSB) standards
  • Perform on-site check-in visits with HCAs working in client homes; follow up on working environment or performance-related concerns as needed
  • Collaborate with HR Department, Care Managers and other team members on HCA performance evaluations
  • Participate in HCA performance support, counseling and disciplinary processes as needed
  • Support the company mission statement and philosophy to promote quality, efficient, comprehensive, compassionate, and effective client care

Work Schedule and Locations: 8:30AM - 3:00PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional availability outside office hours (approximately 2-4 times per month) to schedule early morning or evening site visits. (There is some flexibility in the start and end times, so if this work schedule doesn't exactly line up with your preferred work schedule, please don't let that stop you from applying!) This position will require work as needed from the company's office in Banker's Hill, in client residences throughout San Diego County, and remotely.
Benefits Eligibility: This is a benefits-eligible position at approximately 30 hours per week.
Hiring Pay Range: $35.00 - $44.00 per hour
Requirements
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in Nursing, Physical Therapy, or Occupational Therapy within the past 5 years, including body mechanics/transfers, personal care, general safety
  • 2+ years of paid clinical experience with older or disabled adults with complex medical, cognitive and/or behavioral health needs
  • 2+ years of experience supervising clinical staff
  • At least one of the following licenses active and in good standing within the past 5 years: LVN, RN, OT, OTA, COTA/L, PT, PTA
  • Expertise and comfort level with proper transfer body mechanics, related devices (such as Hoyer lift) and personal care techniques is such that you can teach others
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 40 lbs. unassisted
  • Excellent communication, presentation and public speaking skills, emphasizing the ability to create a supportive and welcoming learning environment
  • Excellent time management, problem-solving skills, and work ethic
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple departments
  • Ability to lead a team of Home Care Aides with a variety of backgrounds and educational experiences
  • Active driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable vehicle
  • Moderate + technology proficiency, including use of cell phone apps and web-based office systems, such as Google Workspace
  • Ability to pass Home Care Services Bureau background and driving checks
