Job description

As the transmission and distribution (T&D) landscape continues to evolve, our Southwest Region is quickly expanding beyond the traditional regulated utility market to meet the needs of new and diverse clients. Data centers, economic development customers, and renewable interconnection customers each bring unique business drivers that demand tailored approaches to their power delivery needs. To deliver exceptional results, we must adopt processes, procedures, and tools designed specifically to support these (and other) emerging markets and their fast-paced, dynamic opportunities. 

Burns & McDonnell seeks an Emerging Markets Projects Manager/Director to lead the growth, strategic development, and execution of emerging markets within the Southwest Region, specifically focusing on data centers, economic development customers, and renewable energy interconnections. This leadership role will require a strategic vision, strong business acumen, execution prowess, and the ability to foster collaboration across various teams, regions, and business lines.The Southwest Region Emerging Markets Projects Manager/Director will report directly to the SWR T&D Global Practice Manager and have overall responsibility for the development and execution of our non-regulated utility projects, teams and pursuits.  
Responsibilities 

  • Strategic Planning & Execution:Develop and implement comprehensive strategic plans to expand Burns & McDonnell's market share in the emerging markets within the Southwest Region. This includes setting ambitious growth objectives and executing strategies to achieve them. 
  • Market Leadership:Establish the SWR as a market leader in renewable energy interconnection services and data center services, proactively identifying and positioning the company for upcoming projects and opportunities through strong collaboration with the national T&D Data Center Market Leader and national T&D Renewable Generation Market Leader. Deep understanding of these markets is critical.  
  • Client Relationship Management:Serve as the primary external point of contact for SWR clients and industry partners within the assigned business lines. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key clients, fostering loyalty and trust. Collaborate effectively with internal teams, including project managers, national business line directors and account managers. 
  • Business Development:Develop and implement strategic business development plans. Actively participate in pursuits, assisting capture managers with proposal development and strategy. 
  • Team Management:Provide leadership and guidance to business line leads responsible for specific areas within the emerging markets. Oversee their performance, provide mentorship, and confirm alignment with overall strategic goals. Assist with hiring and recruiting top talent to support the needs of the business.   
  • Collaboration & Integration:Foster strong collaboration across various teams, including T&D business lines, account management, and locations. Become a key partner of national market leaders in the representative emerging market spaces.  Confirm seamless integration of efforts to maximize efficiency and achieve shared objectives. 
  • Financial Performance:Develop and negotiate profitable business opportunities that align with the respective emerging markets.  Facilitate contract negotiations with key clients and coordinate with required internal resources. Monitor and manage the financial performance of the business lines under your leadership, driving profitability and sustainable growth.  
  • Safety & Quality:Cultivate a strong safety culture and maintain high standards of quality in all projects and operations. Promote proactive communication, continuous improvement, and a commitment to excellence. Commit to consistent and intentional site engagement across the construction portfolio of emerging market projects.    
  • Technical and Execution Oversight:While not an engineering or a project management role, possess sufficient technical and execution understanding of data centers and renewable energy interconnections to effectively guide technical teams and project managers to drive consistency across projects. This may include familiarity with transmission and substation design, construction practices, and project management services.  May be required to serve as the Project Manager for initial projects and opportunities.  Drive an EPC and construction minded execution model, utilizing our self-perform capabilities and industry partnerships, where appropriate.   
  • Industry Knowledge:Maintain a strong understanding of industry trends, emerging technologies, and market dynamics within the relevant emerging market sectors. Facilitate deep partnerships and business relationships with key construction and material vendor partners.   
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business or related degree from an accredited program and 13 years relevant consulting or EPC experience, preferably in the transmission and distribution industry, is required.
  • Demonstrated results in client and business development. 
  • Demonstrated results in managing projects, which includes proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design team coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination. 
  • Excellent facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Demonstrated success as to budget, savings and/or profit margins in completed projects. 
  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead and manage. 
  • Excellent planning and analytical skills. 
  • EPC execution and knowledge of Burns & McDonnell construction practices preferred.   
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients. 
  • Excellent knowledge of project management methodologies and tools including the use of Microsoft Project or equivalent. 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
