What is an emergency room EMT?

Emergency Room EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) are healthcare professionals trained to provide immediate medical care to patients in emergency situations, often within a hospital's emergency department. Their duties include assessing patient conditions, administering basic life support, assisting nurses and doctors, and transporting patients as needed. EMTs play a crucial role in stabilizing patients and supporting the medical team during urgent situations. They are skilled in handling trauma, medical emergencies, and are often the first point of contact for critical patients arriving at the ER.

What are some common challenges emergency room EMTs face during a typical shift?

Emergency Room EMTs often encounter high-stress situations, such as managing multiple patients with varying degrees of urgency and rapidly changing conditions. They must quickly assess and prioritize care, collaborate closely with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, and communicate effectively in fast-paced, sometimes chaotic environments. Additionally, EMTs must be prepared for emotionally charged situations, including trauma cases and critical emergencies, while maintaining professionalism and compassion. Balancing these challenges requires strong adaptability, resilience, and teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an emergency room EMT, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Emergency Room EMT, you need solid emergency medical knowledge, rapid patient assessment abilities, and state EMT certification. Familiarity with emergency medical equipment, EHR systems, and protocols for trauma and cardiac care is typically required. Effective communication, composure under pressure, and teamwork are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure prompt, accurate care for critically ill or injured patients and strong collaboration within the emergency department.

What is the difference between Emergency Room Emt vs Emergency Medical Technician?

AspectEmergency Room EmtEmergency Medical Technician
CertificationsEMT certification, often with additional ER-specific trainingBasic EMT certification, with advanced levels available
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in hospital emergency rooms, assisting medical staffPre-hospital settings, including ambulances and scene response
Job RoleSupports ER team, provides immediate patient care in hospitalProvides initial emergency care outside hospital, stabilizes patients

While both roles require EMT certification, Emergency Room EMTs work mainly within hospital emergency departments, assisting medical staff with patient care. Emergency Medical Technicians operate primarily in pre-hospital environments, focusing on stabilizing patients during transport. The roles are complementary but differ mainly by work setting and scope of practice.

Do emergency room EMTs or emergency room techs get paid more?

Emergency room EMTs typically earn higher wages than emergency room techs because EMTs are trained to provide pre-hospital emergency care and often hold certifications like EMT-Basic or EMT-Paramedic. Techs usually assist with patient care and equipment in the ER but generally have lower pay due to less specialized training. Salary differences can vary based on experience, location, and certifications.

Job description

Full-Time EMT โ€“ Hobart, IN 12 hours Monday โ€“ Friday 7 AM โ€“ 7 PM, 10 hours Saturday 8 AM โ€“ 6 PM

We are seeking two skilled and proactive EMTs to join our Medical Response Team at a large construction project in Hobart, IN. This full-time role is ideal for professionals who thrive in an occupational health, safety, and construction-site environment and want to directly impact the daily well-being of workers onsite.

In this position, you will provide rapid response to medical incidents and play a key role in promoting a safe, healthy work environment when not actively responding to injuries.

Key Responsibilities Emergency Response & Care
  • First Response: Serve as the first responder to all injuries, illnesses, and medical incidents onsite, providing immediate and effective care.

  • Quick Response Bag: Maintain a fully stocked, within-armโ€™s-reach quick response bag at all times.

  • Incident Triage: Administer first aid or determine when referral to an Occupational Health Clinic or Emergency Room is necessary.

  • Escort & Support: Escort employees to external medical providers when needed for further evaluation.

  • Follow-Up Monitoring: Conduct follow-up checks to ensure employees are adhering to work restrictions and progressing toward recovery.

  • Incident Documentation: Maintain accurate, detailed logs of all injuries and incidents for project reporting and compliance.

Proactive Health, Wellness & Safety Engagement

This is not a role where you sit and wait for incidents.

When not actively treating or triaging an injury, you will be highly visible and proactive around the construction site:

  • Promote injury prevention and safe work practices through daily interactions with crews.

  • Conduct walk-throughs to observe work zones and identify opportunities for safety reinforcement.

  • Engage workers in conversations about hydration, fatigue management, PPE use, and overall wellbeing.

  • Support site leadership in reinforcing a strong safety culture and provide reminders about risk-prone behaviors.

  • Look for opportunities to educate on proper lifting techniques, stretching, early reporting of discomfort, and other preventive strategies.

Your presence onsite should contribute to a culture where workers feel supported and comfortable approaching you for concerns, questions, or early signs of discomfort.

Qualifications
  • Active EMT Certification (EMT or EMT-B) in Indiana

  • Experience in emergency medical care or occupational first aid response

  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with workers, foremen, and safety leadership

  • Excellent organizational skills for maintaining detailed logs and documentation

  • Comfort working in a construction site environment and collaborating with a multidisciplinary safety team

  • A proactive, approachable, and engagement-focused mindset

Scheduling

We are hiring two EMTs to cover Monday through Saturday, approximately 35 hours each, with flexible scheduling options based on candidate needs. We are open to creative solutions to ensure full coverage.

Why Join Us?

This is a unique opportunity to:

  • Work in a dynamic construction environment

  • Make a visible impact on worker health and safety

  • Build relationships with crews and be a trusted onsite resource

  • Be part of a growing occupational health model with strong support from Ramp Health

If you're a proactive, confident EMT ready to support both medical response and injury prevention, we encourage you to apply today and join our team in creating a safer, healthier jobsite for everyone.
