Job description

This posting is in anticipation of future openings at Fort Jackson, SC.
Gunsmith can design, fabricate, modify, repair and service foreign and domestic firearms, weapons and accessories. This position will work on external/internal and terminal ballistics; build custom pistols and rifles, as well as other types of weapons systems with minimal supervision.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Performs major repairs on foreign and domestic standard and non-standard small arms weapons, can build either custom pistols or rifles with little or no supervision,
  • Performs detailed assembly and disassembly of foreign and domestic small arms weapons including small arms inspection, and maintenance.
  • Possesses excellent knowledge of gun-smithing tools and procedures, and possesses moderate knowledge of firearms operating principles and ballistics
  • Has knowledge of basic shop safety procedures needed to work in a small arms environment, performs support functions for the shop, to include bead blasting and preparing metal parts for refinishing.
  • Possesses excellent knowledge of gun-smiting tools and procedures, and at least moderate knowledge of firearms operating principles and ballistics.
  • This worker has a thorough understanding of firearm operation principles, has a moderate knowledge of internal/external ballistic theories.
  • Can fabricate special jigs, fixtures and other special tooling with some supervision, can read and understand blueprint drawings, and can work from those drawings under direct supervision.
  • Perform as primary instructor on most standard and non-standard small arms weapon systems.
  • Other support functions include, but are not limited to, ammo inventory and residue turn-in, publication and catalogue updates, tool and capital equipment maintenance, calibration control, weapons cleaning and organizational level weapons maintenance.
  • Performs all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and outside weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to situations where risk of electrical shock and vibration exist. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Requires knowledge in the use of hand tools, machine tools, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties, has the knowledge and skill to design and construct prototype small arms from drawings or customer input.
  • Computer literacy is required.
  • Qualification for this position usually requires attendance at a formal one to two year accredited in-house gun-smithing course, and/or at least two years of work experience in this area.
  • Training and related experience in the field consistent with the requirements set forth in the contract/delivery order.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
  • Position may require travel.
  • Must be available to work any shift. Willing to work weekends and other hours as needed.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:
This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
Compensation Details:
