What is an embedded software engineer?

Embedded Software Engineers design, develop, and optimize software that runs on specialized hardware or embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices. In the context of relocation, this job may require moving to a particular city or country where the employer's development center or project site is located. Companies often support relocation by assisting with moving expenses, visa processing, and settling-in services. Relocating can offer exposure to new technologies, cultures, and professional growth opportunities. It's important to inquire about the specific relocation package and support provided by the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++, real-time operating systems, microcontroller architecture, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (like Git), and often certifications in embedded systems or IoT are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across hardware and software teams. These skills ensure robust, efficient, and reliable product development in complex embedded environments.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Engineer Relocation vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectEmbedded Software Engineer RelocationEmbedded Software Developer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; certifications like C, C++, or RTOS are commonSame as Embedded Software Engineer Relocation
Work EnvironmentTypically in manufacturing, automotive, or consumer electronics companies; involves relocation to different sites or regionsSimilar environments; focus on developing and testing embedded systems
Industry UsageUsed across automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, and industrial automationCommonly used in the same industries for software development roles

Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, with the main difference being that Embedded Software Engineer Relocation emphasizes geographic mobility, often involving relocation to different company sites or regions. The core responsibilities and industry applications are largely overlapping, making them closely related roles in embedded systems development.

Are embedded software engineers in demand?

Embedded software engineers are in high demand due to the growth of IoT, automotive, medical devices, and consumer electronics industries. Skills in C, C++, and real-time operating systems, along with experience in hardware integration, increase employability in this field.

What are the common challenges faced by embedded software engineers when relocating for a new position?

Relocating as an Embedded Software Engineer often involves adapting to new company processes, development tools, and hardware platforms, which can vary significantly between organizations. Additionally, engineers may need to quickly build relationships with cross-functional teams, such as hardware engineers and quality assurance specialists, to ensure seamless product development. Familiarizing oneself with local industry standards or regulatory requirements is also crucial, especially if relocating internationally. Proactively seeking mentorship and participating in team meetings can help smooth the transition and accelerate integration into the new work environment.

Stefanini Group is hiring!

Stefanini is looking for an Embedded Control Software Engineer, Allen Park, MI

For quick apply, please reach out to Saurabh Kapoor at 248-582-6559/saurabh.kapoor@stefanini.com

As an Embedded Controls Software Engineer, you will be a critical contributor to the design, development, and validation of advanced embedded control software for next-generation automotive systems. This specialized role focuses on the Body Control Module, directly impacting vehicle safety, user experience, and electrification readiness. You will leverage your expertise in controls theory, real-time systems, and embedded architecture to architect, develop, and optimize complex, safety-critical software throughout the entire product lifecycle. The Body Control Software team is a team dedicated to creating Body Control Application Software components, developing and enhancing existing software components that integrate with existing architectures, as well as our next-generation vehicle systems. Join our diverse global team located in Dearborn, Palo Alto, Ottawa, Mexico, Germany, and India to design and develop embedded software in areas related to cloud-based computing, ad-hoc computing, and embedded platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement embedded control systems for Body Control Modules (BCM), performing high-level analysis and design planning for new features supporting scalable production and next-generation Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) architectures. Requires a strong grasp of software modeling and embedded design principles.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to capture system-level requirements and translate them into detailed functional/technical specifications for control algorithms and software modules, ensuring alignment with vehicle performance and safety goals.
  • Design, develop, and optimize control algorithms; implement AUTOSAR-compliant software components using C/C++, MATLAB (Stateflow/Simulink), and Python. Use DaVinci Developer for AUTOSAR configuration and integration.
  • Lead test strategy design and execution, including MIL, SIL, and HIL simulations, plus unit/integration testing, such as Google Test. Perform on-target validation using Vector CANoe and the MULTI debugger. Conduct root cause analysis of defects and implement robust fixes.
  • Ensure adherence to ISO 26262 (Functional Safety), ASPICE, and AUTOSAR standards. Enforce quality checks such as static code analysis and Model Advisor reviews to maintain software reliability.
  • Identify development bottlenecks and implement Python-based automation scripts and reusable model templates to streamline workflows, boost efficiency, and reduce development cycle time.

Skills Required

  • MATLAB, Coding, C++, Embedded Software, Embedded Systems

Experience Required

  • 6+ years of experience in IT and 4+ years in development.
  • MATLAB : Candidate should demonstrate hands-on experience using MATLAB/Simulink, including Stateflow, to model, design, and simulate embedded control algorithms for BCM features.
