Job description

Role Overview

Genus PLC is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to join our Biosystems Engineering team, supporting the IntelliGen Technologies platform. This role is focused on embedded Linux, hardware/software integration, and low-level system development, bridging complex electronics and subsystems into a reliable, high-performance software environment. 

The successful candidate will work deeply in embedded Linux (Yocto), write and debug device drivers, and integrate hardware components such as FPGAs, sensors, and electromechanical systems into the operating system layer. The successful candidate will possess strong critical thinking skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams. We are seeking a forward-thinking individual to help us advance and modernize our technology. 

The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $135,000 USD. The salary provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Genus considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills. 

You Will
  • Design, implement, and maintain embedded Linux software for a complex, real-time hardware platform
  • Write, modify, and debug Linux device drivers to support custom hardware and subsystems
  • Integrate hardware components using low-level communication protocols (PCIe, SPI, IC, UART, USB)
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, FPGA, mechanical, and systems engineers to bring hardware designs into the OS layer
  • Support real-time control of optical, fluidic, and electromechanical subsystems (timing critical systems)
  • Debug system level issues across hardware, drivers, and operating system boundaries
  • Develop unit and integration tests to validate system behavior
  • Document designs and implementations in alignment with quality and regulatory expectations 
Requirements

Required Qualifications  

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar 

  • 3-5 years of experience in embedded software development 

  • Strong hands-on experience with embedded Linux, including:   

    • Yocto or similar build systems  

    • Kernel level development and debugging  

    • Device driver development  

  • Demonstrated experience with hardware/software integration, including:   

    • PCIe (FPGA integration)  

    • SPI, IC, UART, USB  

  • Strong understanding of how hardware signals and subsystems are exposed to the OS layer  

  • Proficiency in C/C++ (Golang exposure is a plus but not required)  

  • Comfortable working independently on complex, low-level technical problems  

  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship 

Preferred  

  • Experience with GPUs or SoC accelerators (general exposure is sufficient) 

  • Background in medical devices, life sciences, robotics, or industrial automation 

  • Familiarity with real-time control systems 

  • Exposure to regulated development environments (ISO, IEC, etc.) 

  • Experience working with cross functional hardware and firmware teams
