What is an embedded programmer?

Embedded programmers are software developers who specialize in writing code for embedded systems—computers designed to perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems. These programmers typically work with hardware like microcontrollers, sensors, and other specialized devices, often using languages such as C or C++. Their work ensures that devices like medical equipment, automotive controls, consumer electronics, and industrial machines operate reliably and efficiently. Embedded programmers must have a strong understanding of both software development and hardware integration.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an embedded programmer?

To thrive as an Embedded Programmer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, and experience with microcontroller architectures. Familiarity with development tools like debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (e.g., Git), and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that set high performers apart. These skills and qualities ensure reliable, efficient code development and smooth collaboration within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What are common challenges faced by embedded programmers when integrating hardware and software components?

Embedded programmers often encounter challenges such as limited memory, processing power, and real-time constraints when integrating hardware and software. Debugging can be more complex due to the interaction between code and physical devices, requiring specialized tools like oscilloscopes or logic analyzers. Additionally, ensuring compatibility across various hardware platforms and managing low-level drivers can add to the complexity, making strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail essential in this role.

Job description

We're searching for a Senior Embedded Engineer excited to join our embedded team, where we build hardware products backed by a cloud-based platform and bring new ideas from prototype to production. In this role, you'll lead the design and implementation of the embedded and Android systems code that runs our current and future Bevi products. You'll advance the firmware architecture behind our first-to-market smart water machine and drive the development of tools that let our engineering team invent, implement, and validate new ways to deliver an exceptional user experience at a rapid pace. You'll collaborate closely with electrical, hardware, software, and fellow embedded engineers, drive system definition, documentation, and integration, and mentor others on the team.

Your Day to Day
  • Own and evolve our multi-board firmware architecture to support reliable operation, remote management, and diagnostics across Bevi's expanding fleet and multiple products.
  • Lead the design and implementation of firmware for electromechanical systems, including sensor integration, control algorithms, and low-level hardware-software interaction.
  • Partner with the hardware team to drive new product bring-up, influence architectural decisions early, and improve overall machine performance and functionality.
  • Define and build internal tools that help R&D, product development, and manufacturing monitor, control, and validate systems in development and in the field.
  • Lead triage and root-cause analysis of platform and system-level issues on both new and existing products to quickly reduce customer impact.
  • Drive team process improvements, including unit test frameworks, build automation and CI/CD, and hardware-in-the-loop and firmware testing capabilities.
  • Champion the use of AI across the embedded team, applying it to accelerate development, code generation, testing, and debugging, and help define how we responsibly integrate AI into our firmware workflows and tooling.
  • Set the bar for engineering quality through code and design reviews and strong validation practices, and mentor junior and mid-level engineers.
Requirements
  • A BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other related field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on industry experience developing, releasing, and supporting production-quality, reliable firmware.
  • Advance-level proficiency in embedded C and embedded C++ targeting the ARM Cortex-M family of microcontrollers.
  • Deep experience with bare-metal and RTOS-based applications controlling electromechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ownership across the full product development lifecycle, from initial board bring-up through production release and sustaining support of units in the field.
  • Track record of architecting firmware systems and making design decisions that balance reliability, maintainability, and speed of development.
  • Highly proficient at the hardware/firmware boundary, including debugging physical systems at the board and system level using tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.
  • Strong grasp of modern software development practices, including version control (e.g., git), build automation, and unit testing.
  • Hands-on experience with serial communication protocols: UART, I2C, SPI, USB, Ethernet, DSI, CSI, etc.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers.
  • Experience in Android Open Source Project (AOSP) or embedded Linux is a significant plus.
  • Familiarity with wireless communication protocols (e.g., LTE, WiFi) is a plus.
  • Ability to take initiative and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Team-oriented approach to problem solving and knowledge generation.
  • Experience working in rapidly growing or scaling companies is a plus.
  • Ability to be in the office 3+ days per week.
