How much do embedded firmware developer jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for embedded firmware developer in Houston, TX is $50.20, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $48.89 and $51.63 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges an embedded firmware developer faces when integrating new hardware components into existing systems?

Integrating new hardware components often requires Embedded Firmware Developers to adapt existing code to support different communication protocols or hardware interfaces. This process can be challenging due to limited documentation, real-time resource constraints, and the need to ensure compatibility with legacy systems. Developers must also rigorously test the firmware to catch timing and synchronization issues, which are crucial in embedded environments. Close collaboration with hardware engineers and thorough debugging are essential to successfully overcome these integration challenges.

What is an embedded firmware developer?

Embedded Firmware Developers are engineers who design, write, and test the low-level software (firmware) that runs on embedded systems. These systems are specialized computing devices found in products like cars, medical devices, appliances, and industrial machines. Firmware developers work closely with hardware engineers to ensure the software efficiently controls and interacts with hardware components, often using programming languages like C or C++. Their work is crucial for the reliable operation and functionality of devices that rely on embedded technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded firmware developer?

To thrive as an Embedded Firmware Developer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, strong programming skills in C/C++, and experience with microcontroller architectures. Familiarity with development tools like debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (e.g., Git), and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required. Analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for designing reliable, efficient firmware that integrates seamlessly with hardware and meets project requirements.

What is the difference between Embedded Firmware Developer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

Job description

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Software & Firmware Development Manager to lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced software, firmware, and intelligent automation solutions for oilfield production operations. This role focuses on SCADA systems, industrial automation, edge computing, and AI/ML applications to optimize production efficiency, enhance reliability, reduce downtime, and ensure safe, compliant operations in upstream oil & gas environments.
The successful candidate will lead cross-functional teams of software engineers, firmware developers, data scientists, and automation specialists. They will drive innovation in real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and intelligent control systems for well management, artificial lift, and production optimization.
Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Team Management: Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software, firmware, and AI/ML engineers. Set technical direction, conduct performance reviews, and foster a culture of innovation, quality, and collaboration.
  • SCADA & Automation Development: Oversee the architecture, design, implementation, and maintenance of SCADA systems. Develop and optimize HMI screens, control logic, communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, OPC UA, MQTT), and data acquisition pipelines for field assets.
  • Firmware Development: Manage embedded firmware development for controllers, edge devices, sensors, and IoT hardware in harsh oilfield environments. Ensure real-time performance, reliability, security, and compliance with industry standards.
  • AI/ML Integration: Drive the development and deployment of AI/ML models for predictive maintenance, production optimization, anomaly detection, reservoir insights, and automated control. Integrate models into SCADA/automation platforms for edge and cloud inference.
  • Project & Product Lifecycle: Lead end-to-end development projects, including requirements gathering, architecture design, agile execution, testing, commissioning, and ongoing support. Manage vendor relationships and third-party integrations.
  • System Optimization & Reliability: Ensure high availability, cybersecurity, and scalability of OT/IT systems. Implement data analytics, reporting, and visualization tools to support operational decision-making.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all solutions meet regulatory requirements (e.g., API, ISA, IEC standards), cybersecurity best practices (IEC 62443), and company HSE policies. Support field commissioning and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Innovation & Strategy: Collaborate with operations, engineering, customers, and sales teams to identify opportunities for digital transformation. Evaluate emerging technologies in automation, IIoT, and generative AI for oilfield applications.
  • Budget & Resources: Manage department budget, resource allocation, timelines, and vendor contracts.
