How much do embedded software intern jobs pay per hour?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Embedded Software Intern position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an Embedded Software Intern, a solid understanding of C/C++ programming, electronics fundamentals, and basic knowledge of real-time operating systems (RTOS) or embedded systems is essential, often supported by coursework in computer engineering or related fields. Familiarity with integrated development environments (IDEs), hardware debuggers, and version control systems like Git is important, and experience with microcontroller platforms such as ARM or Arduino can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns contribute effectively and learn quickly within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, efficient software that interacts seamlessly with hardware components in real-world applications.
What does an Embedded Software Intern do?
An Embedded Software Intern assists in developing, testing, and debugging software for embedded systems, such as microcontrollers and IoT devices. They work with programming languages like C/C++ and collaborate with engineers to optimize system performance. Responsibilities may include writing firmware, troubleshooting hardware-software interactions, and documenting code. Interns gain hands-on experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS), device drivers, and communication protocols. This role provides valuable industry exposure and technical skills essential for a career in embedded systems development.
What kind of projects or tasks can an Embedded Software Intern expect to work on?
As an Embedded Software Intern, you will typically work on tasks such as writing and testing low-level code for microcontrollers, assisting in debugging hardware/software integration, and supporting the development and documentation of embedded systems. You might also participate in code reviews, contribute to firmware updates, or help automate testing processes. Interns often collaborate closely with software engineers, hardware designers, and quality assurance teams to bring projects from prototype to production. These hands-on responsibilities provide a valuable opportunity to apply academic knowledge and develop practical skills that are highly valued in the embedded systems industry.

Job description
Function-
Geospace is currently seeking an Engineering Software Intern with some knowledge of C++, C#, Network Communication, .NET API, SQL, or embedded C to join our Software/Firmware Application Development team for a summer internship. The role requires a self-starting individual with a desire to use junior/senior level software skills. Tasks could include software design, coding, database access or software testing to develop a strong understanding of process flow.
You’ll be part of a cross-functional team that’s responsible for the full product development life cycle, from conception to general availability with support for manufacturability. You should be open to learning Agile methodologies and the use of Visual Studio, AI, Machine Learning or the use of a Data Lake.
Duties:
- Learn about maintaining and upgrading the existing company software, used to control devices, testing and tools for customer use after deployment.
- Assist with the end-to-end life cycle for the production of software and applications.
- Work with management, hardware engineering groups, other development team members, and customer input, to understand and identify potential features and solve issues.
- Learn guiding principles of analysis, development, and deployment of software.
- Track progress through the software lifecycle.
- Exploring new technologies such as implementation of a Data Lake or the use of AI to extract meaningful data from the repository.
Students must be enrolled in a STEM college degree, preferably electrical engineering, computer science, or mechanical engineering or other closely related field.
The following qualifications are desired, not required:
- Familiarity with C++/C#/.Net.
- Responsive design principles.
- Knowledge of GUI features for displaying large numbers of components and generation of reports.
- Graphing libraries and Time-series data analytic displays.
- An understanding of Operational UI design and user experiences for SaaS applications.
- Software and product lifecycle management awareness.
- A desire to learn new technologies and UX methodologies.
- Good communication skills - ability to understand work documents, write effectively, and communicate information clearly to coworkers in the English language.
