What is the difference between Embedded Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded EngineerFirmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fields; certifications like ARM or IoT certifications are commonBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related; often similar certifications in embedded systems or firmware development
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing hardware-software integrated systems, often in industrial, automotive, or consumer electronicsWriting, testing, and debugging low-level code that runs directly on hardware devices like microcontrollers or embedded processors
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics manufacturers, automotive, aerospace, IoT companiesConsumer electronics, IoT devices, medical devices, automotive systems

Embedded Engineers and Firmware Engineers often work closely, but Embedded Engineers focus on both hardware and software integration, while Firmware Engineers specialize in low-level code development that runs directly on hardware. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but their primary focus and work environment differ slightly.

What does an Embedded Engineer do?

An Embedded Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices not typically considered computers, such as automotive controllers, medical devices, and consumer electronics. These engineers write code that interacts directly with hardware, optimizing for performance, reliability, and resource constraints. Their work often involves using languages like C and C++, debugging hardware-software interactions, and ensuring the embedded system meets all functional and safety requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, with strong skills in C/C++, microcontroller programming, and embedded systems design. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), hardware debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required, and certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, efficient embedded solutions that integrate seamlessly with hardware and meet user requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Embedded Engineers when working on cross-functional teams?

Embedded Engineers often collaborate closely with hardware designers, software developers, and test engineers, which can present challenges related to communication and integration. Aligning the firmware with hardware specifications, managing resource constraints, and ensuring timely debugging across different platforms are frequent hurdles. To succeed, Embedded Engineers need strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset to bridge gaps between disciplines and deliver cohesive, reliable systems.

Job description

Your Work. One Partner. Real Impact.
Most IT roles scatter your energy across a dozen clients and a hundred tickets. As a Placement Engineer at Five Nines, you're embedded on-site at a single partner location - becoming their trusted technology advisor, their go-to problem solver, and a genuine extension of their team. You'll know their environment inside and out, build relationships that matter, and see the direct results of your work every day.
This is the role for an IT professional who values depth over breadth, relationships over transactions, and doing things right over doing things fast.
Who We Are
Five Nines is a 9-time Inc. 5000 awarded managed services provider built on a simple idea: technology should work, and when it doesn't, the right people should fix it - fast. We partner with organizations across the region to deliver IT support, infrastructure management, and strategic technology guidance. Our team is tight-knit, high-performing, committed to growth and development, and guided by our 14 Fundamentals that shape how we work with each other and the partners we serve.
What You'll Do
You are the partner's first call, their trusted advisor, and the person who makes IT feel effortless. Day to day, that looks like:
  • Owning incident and service request resolution end-to-end for your dedicated partner site
  • Supporting Microsoft core business applications, operating systems, WAN/LAN networking, VPN, Terminal Services, Citrix, VMware, and Hyper-V
  • Managing your daily workflow in ConnectWise - maintaining ticket hygiene, SLA adherence, and proactive partner communication
  • Creating and maintaining thorough IT documentation so institutional knowledge lives in the system, not just your head
  • Collaborating with the broader Field Services team to route complex issues efficiently and escalate when needed
  • Joining partner IT meetings and serving as a credible, informed technology voice in the room
  • Serve as the on-site coordination point during project implementations - giving partner-side context and ensuring smooth execution alongside the broader Five Nines team.
  • Being seated at a partner site doesn't mean going at it alone. You'll attend team meetings and training, participate in internal audits and standards work, and contribute to committees - staying plugged into the Five Nines community even when you're working off-site.

Requirements
What You Bring
An ideal candidate is technically sharp, genuinely people-oriented, and takes pride in professional, reliable work. You'll need:
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field
  • Minimum 1 year of hands-on experience with the Five Nines technology stack (or equivalent MSP toolset)
  • At least 2 years of customer service experience - you know how to leave people feeling heard and helped
  • At least 1 year of customer-facing, in-person support experience - you're comfortable as the person in the room
  • Reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and the ability to be consistently on-site at a dedicated partner location

Why Five Nines
We're a team that invests in each other and holds ourselves to a high standard - not because we have to, but because that's who we are. At Five Nines you'll find:
  • A culture guided by clear Fundamentals - real values we actually use to make decisions
  • A role with real ownership - you're not a ticket-closer, you're an embedded partner
  • Full health care benefits options including dental, vision
  • Company laptop, home internet and mobile phone stipend
  • Long term and short-term disability insurance
  • 401K plan with matching
  • Open PTO
