How much do embedded design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded design engineer in the United States is $127,979.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $101,000.00 and $152,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High-level positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and expertise in high-demand areas or management responsibilities.

What does an embedded design engineer do?

An embedded design engineer develops and tests embedded systems and firmware used in electronic devices. They work with microcontrollers, hardware schematics, and programming languages like C or C++, often using tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers to ensure system functionality and reliability.

What is the difference between Embedded Design Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Design EngineerFirmware Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing hardware and embedded systemsWriting and optimizing low-level software for embedded devices
Skills & CertificationsEmbedded systems, hardware design, C/C++, microcontrollersEmbedded C, C++, real-time OS, debugging tools
Work EnvironmentHardware labs, embedded system developmentSoftware development, testing on embedded platforms
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, industrialConsumer electronics, IoT, medical devices

Embedded Design Engineers focus on creating the hardware and embedded systems, while Firmware Engineers specialize in developing the software that runs on these systems. Both roles often collaborate but require different skill sets and certifications. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Will AI replace embedded developers?

Embedded Design Engineers develop hardware and firmware for embedded systems, and while AI can automate certain coding tasks and optimize design processes, it is unlikely to fully replace these professionals. Instead, AI tools are expected to augment their work, requiring engineers to adapt by developing skills in AI integration, system architecture, and troubleshooting. Human expertise remains essential for complex problem-solving and system validation in embedded development.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, data science, or executive-level engineering roles can earn $500,000 or more annually. These positions often require advanced skills, certifications, and leadership responsibilities, typically found in senior or executive roles within large technology or engineering companies.
