Position Overview
Fusion is seeking a Controls Engineer (Junior or Senior level) who is equally comfortable:
Programming PLCs and developing control logic
- Physically wiring, integrating, and commissioning machinery
- Interfacing with CNC controls
- Working directly with customers in production environments
This role is on-site in Canton, MI when not traveling.
Travel responsibilities include:
- Single-machine demo installationsMulti-machine infrastructure system commissioning
- Customer validation and production supporThe ideal candidate is technically strong, hands-on, and confident in customer-facing environments, including technical sales discussions.
Key Responsibilities
Controls Programming & System Development
- Develop, simulate, and debug PLC-based control systems
- Design and implement HMI interfaces
- Configure industrial communication protocols
- Develop and tune PID control loops for high-pressure CO2 systems
- Implement structured, efficient code following sound software design principles
- Integrate Pure-Cut platform with CNC controllers
- Support embedded microcontroller and pressure regulation subsystems
- Ensure safety interlocks and pressure monitoring systems meet operational and regulatory standards
CNC Integration
- Integrate Pure-Cut systems with:
- CNC lathes
- Mills
- Drilling and turning centers
- Swiss-style machines
- Interface with OEM machine tool builders
- Integrate via M-codes and machine signals
- Optimize system performance for titanium, stainless steel, aluminum, and precision medical materials
Hands-On Build & Commissioning
- Wire and connect control panels and field devices
- Troubleshoot electrical and automation systems
- Support in-house-builds and system validation at Canton headquarters
- Perform on-site commissioning and startup
- Diagnose and resolve hardware/software issues in the field
Customer-Facing & Technical Sales Support
- Serve as a technical liaison for customers and partners
- Support sales demonstrations and technical presentations
- Participate in pre-sale discussions to scope integration requirements
- Provide operator training and startup support
- Represent Fusion professionally in aerospace, automotive, industrial, and medical manufacturing environments
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with mechanical and applications engineers designing high-pressure CO2 hardware
- Review CAD drawings
- Support new product development initiatives
- Manage timelines and deliverables
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts
Qualifications
Junior Controls Engineer (Level I):
- 2 – 5 years of controls or industrial automation experience
- Exposure to CNC systems preferred
- Comfortable with hands-on machine work
Senior Controls Engineer (Level II / Senior):
- 7+ years of controls engineering experience
- Proven experience in integrating CNC equipment
- Experience leading installations and commissioning
- Experience with high-pressure process control systems preferred
Technical Skills (Preferred)
- PLC platforms
- HMI/SCADA systems
- CNC integration
- Swiss-style machining environments
- Industrial networking
- PID control systems
- Electrical panel troubleshooting
- CAD tools
Additional Requirements
- On-site presence in Canton, MI when not traveling
- Willingness to travel 25 – 50% (multiple trips per month possible)
- Valid passport and driver’s license
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Ability to pass background check
- Strong communication skills and professional demeanor
