Definition
Under general supervision of the Server Operations Manager and a Senior Server Specialist this role performs server configuration, administration and maintenance duties for the SRPMIC. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt and TERM-LIMITED.
Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.
Examples of Tasks
1. Mentoring: Mentors junior staff and other team members to develop server-related technical and customer service skills.
2. Server Maintenance: Administers and maintains a variety of Linux and Windows Servers in an enterprise environment to include physical and virtual servers. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Configures and deploys servers onto bare metal and virtualized platforms.
  • Configures systems utilizing Bash, PowerShell, Python and Ansible.
  • Maintains and monitors backups, security policies and virus protection.
  • Detects, analyzes, diagnoses and resolves problems with server hardware/software solutions.
  • Provides support where needed for incident resolution and root cause analysis.
  • Documents OS and application installation and configuration steps.
  • Ensures an accurate inventory and solution diagram exists for all hardware/software solutions.

3. DevOps: Manages containerization platforms in local and hybrid environments using industry standard tools and practices.
  • Deploys and configures servers and clusters supporting containerized workloads
  • Creates well documented scripts, configuration files, YAML code, etc.
  • Supports the ideas and principles of infrastructure as code
  • Collaborates with development and operations teams to manage CI/CD pipelines
  • Maintains access controls, data protection measures and security patching
  • Proactively monitors system health and performance to ensure high availability of applications
  • Collaborates across teams to resolve issues promptly and provide improvements as needed
4. Enterprise Services: Supports enterprise services including, but not limited to, Active Directory, DNS, PKI, DHCP, IPAM, Email and Document Storage.
  • Supports Active Directory administration such as account maintenance, group policy management, etc.
  • Generates certificate requests and applies them as needed
  • Manages DNS records such as A, CNAME, delegation and other entries
  • Adds and removes DHCP reservations, creates and modifies scope
  • Verifies and Reserves addresses in SolarWinds IPAM
  • Verifies, configures and modifies user accounts for email
  • Manages Email subsystems for communication and alerting

5. Configuration Management: Maintains an accurate inventory of computer systems, servers and software to ensure a consistent state in patch levels and software versions to meet Security and Vendor recommendations
  • Automates deployment throughout the overall lifecycle of servers.
  • Performs regular patching of systems to comply with security compliance and vendor recommendations.
  • Develops, maintains and implements reports needed to ensure compliance.
  • Manages server antivirus deployment and monitors activity reports.
  • Develops and follows industry standard OS hardening practices
  • Troubleshoots issues as encountered and/or reported.

6. Monitoring: Manage system alerts and use tools to monitor server performance.
  • Deploys monitoring tools and agents and configure alerts as necessary
  • Monitors email or text alerts that would indicate problems requiring immediate response.
  • Performs administrative tasks, maintenance plans, application support as remediation

7. On Call: Will be required to participate in a rotating on-call after-hours work schedule.
  • On-call rotation is weekly, Monday PM through Monday AM. Responsible for supporting both Server and Network solutions, after hours, escalating to senior technical staff as needed.
  • Respond to off-hours alerts from automated systems, and requests for help from other IT teams, including coming on-site to resolve issues, if required.

8. Documentation: Creates and reviews documentation as needed, such as:
  • Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and System Operation Guides (SOG)
  • ServiceNow Knowledge Base articles or training material for other staff member use.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Outlook/Exchange for email, calendars and contacts
  • Reviews quotes from vendors and ensures accuracy and completeness and writes recommendations for senior staff review of products and solutions.

9. Miscellaneous: Performs other IT job related tasks as assigned by the Senior Server staff, Infrastructure Manager, Assistant IT Director (Infrastructure & Operations) or IT Director.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, ordinances, customs and traditions of the SRPMIC.
  • Knowledge of current Linux and other Network Operating Systems (Red Hat Linux Preferred)
  • Knowledge of container orchestration tools.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tools and processes.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure automation and configuration management tools.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages.
  • Knowledge of technical writing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of IT server/network foundations, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of VMware vSphere, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Active Directory, DHCP and DNS.
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft 365 suite of products including Teams, OneDrive, Intune and other cloud services.

  • Skill interfacing at all staff levels and providing effective verbal and written communication.
  • Skill managing small to medium server/network projects.
  • Skill to effectively analyze and solve problems.

  • Ability to diagnose and respond to infrastructure issues in an accurate, timely and thorough manner.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline is preferred.
Experience:
  • Four (4) years of years' experience in the following required:
  • Working in IT, professional services, and/or customer support organizations including hands-on experience in server implementation, monitoring, managing, troubleshooting and reporting.
  • Direct work experience in administration of modern Linux and Windows servers supporting networked clients in a distributed environment.
  • Two (2) years demonstrated experience performing the following tasks required:
  • Hands-on work with RedHat or other Linux, system/server deployments, maintenance, patching and advanced troubleshooting
  • Managing infrastructure utilizing Ansible, Terraform and Kubernetes
  • Experience managing diverse services including Active Directory, Group Policy, Exchange, VMWare, IIS, DNS, DHCP, WINS.
  • Management of Windows Active Directory domains, users, groups, policies, logon scripts and profiles.
  • Providing Level II support of infrastructure issues.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
