Position Summary

Menahga Public Schools is seeking a dependable, enthusiastic, and student-centered Long-Term Elementary Substitute Teacher to provide classroom instruction and continuity for an extended period of time. The successful candidate will create a positive, safe, and supportive learning environment while implementing established lesson plans, maintaining classroom routines, assessing student learning, and supporting the academic and social-emotional needs of elementary students.

The Long-Term Elementary Substitute Teacher will work collaboratively with building staff, administration, specialists, and families as appropriate to ensure a consistent and successful educational experience for students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide daily classroom instruction and supervision for elementary students.
• Follow and implement lesson plans, curriculum materials, and instructional expectations provided by the classroom teacher and/or building administration.
• Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and structured classroom environment.
• Maintain classroom routines, procedures, and expectations.
• Deliver engaging, age-appropriate instruction aligned with district curriculum and learning objectives.
• Support students with a variety of academic abilities and learning needs.
• Monitor student progress and provide appropriate feedback regarding student learning.
• Complete classroom assignments, assessments, grading, and other instructional responsibilities as appropriate for the long-term assignment.
• Maintain accurate attendance and classroom records.
• Provide appropriate classroom management and address student behavior in accordance with district policies and procedures.
• Communicate student concerns, accomplishments, and significant issues to the appropriate classroom teacher, building administration, or other staff.
• Work cooperatively with special education teachers, paraprofessionals, specialists, counselors, and other school personnel.
• Follow Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 plans, behavior plans, and other student support plans as directed and permitted within the role.
• Provide appropriate accommodations and modifications as outlined by student plans and district procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and school matters.
• Supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned duties.
• Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment.
• Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and other building activities as appropriate for the assignment.
• Communicate professionally and respectfully with students, parents/guardians, staff, and administration.
• Use district technology and educational resources appropriately.
• Follow all Menahga Public Schools policies, procedures, safety requirements, and applicable laws and regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or administration.

Classroom Management Responsibilities

The Long-Term Elementary Substitute Teacher is expected to:

• Establish clear classroom expectations from the beginning of the assignment.
• Use positive and consistent behavior-management strategies.
• Promote respect, responsibility, cooperation, and positive student relationships.
• Address behavioral concerns promptly and appropriately.
• Maintain a classroom environment that supports student learning and emotional well-being.
• Seek assistance from building administration when student behavior or safety concerns require additional support.

Qualifications

Required:

• Current Minnesota teaching license appropriate to the assignment, or
• Qualifications necessary to serve as a substitute teacher under Minnesota requirements.
• Ability to successfully complete required background checks and district employment requirements.
• Strong communication and classroom-management skills.
• Ability to work effectively with elementary-aged students.
• Dependable attendance and punctuality.

Preferred:

• Elementary teaching experience.
• Previous substitute teaching experience.
• Experience working with diverse student learning needs.
• Familiarity with elementary curriculum and instructional practices.
• Experience working in a public-school setting.

Work Environment

The position is performed primarily in an elementary school classroom and school setting. Duties may require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, supervising students, and participating in classroom and school activities.

Employment Conditions

• Position is subject to district policies and procedures.
• Employment is contingent upon completion of required background checks and employment documentation.
• Assignment length and work schedule will be determined by district needs.
• Compensation will be determined in accordance with Menahga Public Schools' applicable substitute/long-term substitute teacher compensation schedule and district policy.
• Benefits, if applicable, will be provided in accordance with district policy and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
