The responsibilities of an elementary school counselor include supporting students and teachers in ensuring the success of the students. As an elementary school counselor, you work with children one-on-one and in groups to help with their social development, self-esteem, and academic standing using various resources. You discuss areas that need attention with their teachers and parents and determine ways for them to improve. Regarding duties, you listen, problem solve, provide guidance, and recommend tools and strategies for each parent and teacher to help each child succeed. You may occasionally have to deal with potential emergency situations as well, such as suspected child abuse.
