What is an electronics tester?

Electronics Testers are professionals who inspect, analyze, and evaluate electronic equipment and components to ensure they function properly and meet quality standards. They use specialized tools and testing equipment to diagnose issues, verify performance, and document results. Electronics Testers work in various industries, including manufacturing, telecommunications, and consumer electronics, playing a critical role in quality control and product development. Their work helps prevent faulty products from reaching customers and ensures safety and reliability.

What is the difference between Electronics Tester vs Electronics Assembler?

Industry UsageElectronics manufacturing, quality controlElectronics manufacturing, production
Common Search/ComparisonElectronics Tester vs Electronics Assembler

Electronics Testers focus on inspecting and verifying electronic components and systems, ensuring quality and functionality. Electronics Assemblers, on the other hand, are involved in assembling electronic devices and components. While both roles work within electronics manufacturing and may require similar certifications, Testers primarily perform testing and quality checks, whereas Assemblers handle the physical assembly process.

How do you become an electronics tester?

To become an electronics tester, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with technical training or an associate degree in electronics or a related field. Gaining experience with electronic testing tools and procedures, such as oscilloscopes and multimeters, and obtaining certifications like IPC or ISTQB can improve job prospects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electronics tester?

To thrive as an Electronics Tester, you need a strong understanding of electronic circuits, troubleshooting, and quality assurance principles, often supported by a relevant technical diploma or degree. Familiarity with testing equipment like oscilloscopes, multimeters, and sometimes certifications such as IPC or ISO standards are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for accurately diagnosing issues and reporting findings. These skills ensure the reliability and safety of electronic products, preventing costly errors and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

What are some common challenges electronics testers face when troubleshooting faulty components or systems?

Electronics Testers often encounter challenges such as isolating the root cause of a malfunction, especially when dealing with complex circuit boards or systems with multiple interconnected parts. Another frequent hurdle is interpreting ambiguous test results, which may require a deep understanding of both the testing equipment and the device under test. Effective communication with engineers and production teams is also crucial, as test findings can impact product design and manufacturing processes. Staying up-to-date with new testing technologies and safety protocols is essential for success in this role.

This position requires a self-starter who thrives in a collaborative environment and can oversee designs through the entire lifecycle—from concept to manufacturing, assembly, and testing. The ideal candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality solutions for flight missions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop electronic circuits from the component perspective, including power systems, amplifiers, DACs, high-speed digital, and mixed signal designs.
  • Design and develop intra-system harnessing.
  • Integrate cameras, lasers, data storage, computational systems, and science instrumentation into designs.
  • Modify and adapt designs to meet specific mission requirements for computational camera systems.
  • Utilize Altium Designer for circuit design and PSPICE for simulation.
  • Collaborate with external vendors for PCB fabrication and perform board population as needed.
  • Conduct functional testing, troubleshooting, and assembly of electronic systems.
  • Prepare detailed documentation, including schematics, BOMs, and test procedures.
  • Work closely with manufacturing and assembly teams to ensure seamless manufacturing and delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, scientists, and engineers across avionics, software, thermal/structural, and mechanical design teams.
  • Occasionally support overtime efforts to meet delivery deadlines for flight missions.
  • Engage with scientists, project managers, and chief engineers to ensure mission success.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers from the Electronics Systems Branch, including avionics leads, FPGA designers, and electronic designers.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in electronic design and development.
  • Proficiency in Altium Designer and PSPICE simulation tools.
  • Strong understanding of power electronics, EMI/EMC considerations, signal integrity, high-speed digital, and mixed signal circuit principles.
  • Hands-on experience with circuit design, simulation, and integration.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing and assembly processes for electronic systems.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with electronic hardware design and parts selection.
  • Familiarity with PCB fabrication processes and board population.
