Job description

Software Engineer, Product

We're hiring a full-time Software Engineer, Product to join our team. You will own product features end to end, from idea to production, working closely with the founders and AI engineers to turn user needs into features people use in production.

This is a generalist role at an early-stage company. You'll write specs, build prototypes, code features across the stack, talk to users, and shape the roadmap. Product work that cuts across engineering, AI, design, and customer feedback tends to land here, and you'll be the person who makes sure it gets done well.

Because we're an early-stage company moving fast, we're looking for someone who can move the product forward without heavy process. This is an in-person role, 5 days a week in our office. The ability to think on your feet, collaborate tightly with a small team, and pair in person on hard problems is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ship product features: Develop product features end to end, across frontend and backend, from initial user problem to shipped feature.
  • Own the user-facing surface: Take responsibility for quality, polish, and the details that make the product feel good to use.
  • Translate needs into specs: Turn user feedback and business goals into clear, prioritized work for yourself and others.
  • Partner with AI engineers: Scope, ship, and refine AI-powered features alongside the AI team.
  • Run experiments: Define the learning goal, measure the result, and use it to decide what ships next.
  • Talk to users: Bring user feedback into the roadmap on a regular cadence.
  • Cover the seams: Pick up the product work that cuts across engineering, AI, design, and customer feedback and doesn't sit cleanly in any one team's scope.
What We Are Looking For
  • Strong full-stack engineering experience shipping production software in TypeScript/Node and React
  • Hands-on experience with NestJS or a similar opinionated Node framework (Express, Fastify)
  • Frontend fluency in React, TypeScript, and modern tooling (Vite, TanStack Query/Router, or equivalent)
  • Comfort with PostgreSQL and an ORM such as Prisma or Kysely
  • You care what gets built, not just how it's implemented
  • Experience working closely with designers and product managers, or comfort playing both roles yourself
  • Ability to write clear specs and explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical teammates and customers
Nice to Have
  • Experience at an AI-first or LLM-powered product
  • Familiarity with our component stack: Radix UI, Tailwind, Tiptap
  • Familiarity with Datadog for monitoring and debugging backend services
  • Experience building Electron or Tauri desktop apps (Windows and MacOS)
  • Next.js experience (we use it for internal admin)
  • Experience with billing, entitlements, pricing experiments, or product analytics
  • Familiarity with WorkOS or similar identity providers
  • Comfort using SQL and dashboards to understand product behavior
About Fluency

Fluency builds a platform that captures how work actually happens inside large organizations, measures productivity and process conformance, and analyzes where AI can do the work.

We capture observable work data across tools and systems, structure it into a model of how work runs, and use it to measure productivity, check process conformance, and analyze where AI changes the work.

Fluency is looking for a Software Engineer, Product to ship the user-facing product end to end, working alongside founders and AI engineers to turn customer needs into features Fortune 500 users actually use.

Our Customers

Customers include CVS Health, Aon, and PVH.

Location
  • Full-time, in-person role based in San Francisco, CA.
  • We offer E-3 sponsorship for Australians to relocate with stipend.
This Role Is Not A Fit If
  • You want hybrid or remote
  • You're not comfortable with rapid iteration
  • You haven't owned features in production
  • Requirements need to be locked down before you can move
  • You dislike constraints (we have them: cost, latency, reliability tradeoffs are real)
  • You don't have a good reason for wanting to work at an early-stage company
Hiring Process
  • Resume screen
  • 1:1 with founder
  • Technical deep-dive on past product engineering work
  • Work through a real problem with the team
  • Offer

We strongly encourage applicants from underrepresented backgrounds to apply. Diverse teams build better products.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: US$180,000 to US$250,000
  • ESOP: Available
  • US$1,000 per month food and commuting allowance
  • Laptop of choice
