How much do electromagnetic design engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for electromagnetic design engineer in the United States is $49.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $40.87 and $57.21 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an Electromagnetic Design Engineer do?

An Electromagnetic Design Engineer specializes in designing and analyzing systems and components that involve electromagnetic fields, such as antennas, sensors, and electronic devices. They work on ensuring devices comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards and minimize interference. Their tasks often include modeling electromagnetic behavior using simulation software, conducting experiments, and collaborating with other engineers to integrate electromagnetic considerations into product development. These professionals are crucial in industries like telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and defense.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electromagnetic Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electromagnetic Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, physics, and electromagnetics, typically with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with simulation tools like Ansys HFSS, CST Studio Suite, and experience using CAD software are commonly required, along with knowledge of relevant industry standards. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help engineers work effectively on interdisciplinary teams and convey complex concepts. These combined abilities are essential for designing efficient, reliable electromagnetic systems and ensuring successful integration in complex projects.

What is the difference between Electromagnetic Design Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectElectromagnetic Design EngineerRF Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, specialization in electromagneticsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF or Communications focus
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, simulation software, prototype testingTesting labs, signal analysis, communication systems
Industry UsageElectromagnetic component and system design, antennas, sensorsWireless communication, radar, satellite systems

Electromagnetic Design Engineers focus on designing and analyzing electromagnetic components and systems, often working with simulations and prototypes. RF Engineers specialize in radio frequency systems, signal transmission, and communication technologies. While both roles require a strong background in electromagnetics, their specific applications and industry focus differ.

What are some common challenges faced by Electromagnetic Design Engineers when working on new product development?

Electromagnetic Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as minimizing electromagnetic interference (EMI), ensuring compliance with industry standards, and optimizing designs for both performance and manufacturability. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams—including mechanical, electronic, and software engineers—is essential to address these challenges and integrate electromagnetic solutions seamlessly into products. Regular testing, simulation, and iteration are key parts of the role, requiring adaptability and strong problem-solving skills.

Job description

Job/Position Summary

Design state-of-the-art RF/microwave components, modules, front-ends, and SiP's using 3DGS innovative glass technology. Responsible for solving major and complex engineering problems in one or more phases of a developmental project involving analysis, research design, development, fabrication and/or testing of a device or system. You will own end-to-end RF/microwave designs from initial definition through production. The candidate selected must have the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design integrated passive devices such as filters, multiplexers, couplers, and baluns.
  • Design substrate integrated waveguide components, including filters, transitions, packages, and antennas.
  • Design high-frequency interposers for MMICs, including internal matching and transmission lines.
  • Perform circuit and electromagnetic simulations, including advanced optimization and tuning techniques. Desired experience with multi-technology assembly and circuit-EM co-simulation.
  • Engage with customers to understand their requirements and provide expert guidance on microwave solutions.
  • Create test procedures, technical white papers, and participate in technical proposal writing.
  • Interface with manufacturing to ensure new designs meet design rules and achieve good performance, yields, and reliability.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Help establish technology roadmap and lead key internal development projects.
  • Perform additional functions and other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or related field, or PhD preferred
  • 5 years of RF/microwave design experience. 10 years preferred.
  • Ability to travel, if required.
  • This position will require lawful access to ITAR/EAR and CUI controlled information, and employees in these roles will need to meet those requirements. Requirements may include US Citizenship, US Permanent Resident, or the ability to meet contract-specific licensure requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven microwave experience 30-100+ GHz. Highly desired to have previous waveguide design experience.
  • In-depth understanding of microwave theory, electromagnetic principles, active/passive RF device modeling, and RF circuit design.
  • Expert proficiency using industry standard electromagnetic simulation tools (ADS, AWR, HFSS, CST).
  • Proven track record of successful product development. Strong desire and commitment to take the product from concept to volume production
  • Hands-on lab experience with RF test equipment, probe stations, and assembly.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor manufacturing processes for RF/microwave components.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to debug complex systems effectively.

Physical/Working Requirements

  • Must be able to wear personal protective gear most of the day (where applicable).
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
