How much do electromagnetic design engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for electromagnetic design engineer in the United States is $49.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $40.87 and $57.21 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an Electromagnetic Design Engineer do?

An Electromagnetic Design Engineer specializes in designing and analyzing systems and components that involve electromagnetic fields, such as antennas, sensors, and electronic devices. They work on ensuring devices comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards and minimize interference. Their tasks often include modeling electromagnetic behavior using simulation software, conducting experiments, and collaborating with other engineers to integrate electromagnetic considerations into product development. These professionals are crucial in industries like telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and defense.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electromagnetic Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electromagnetic Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, physics, and electromagnetics, typically with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with simulation tools like Ansys HFSS, CST Studio Suite, and experience using CAD software are commonly required, along with knowledge of relevant industry standards. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help engineers work effectively on interdisciplinary teams and convey complex concepts. These combined abilities are essential for designing efficient, reliable electromagnetic systems and ensuring successful integration in complex projects.

What is the difference between Electromagnetic Design Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectElectromagnetic Design EngineerRF Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, specialization in electromagneticsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF or Communications focus
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, simulation software, prototype testingTesting labs, signal analysis, communication systems
Industry UsageElectromagnetic component and system design, antennas, sensorsWireless communication, radar, satellite systems

Electromagnetic Design Engineers focus on designing and analyzing electromagnetic components and systems, often working with simulations and prototypes. RF Engineers specialize in radio frequency systems, signal transmission, and communication technologies. While both roles require a strong background in electromagnetics, their specific applications and industry focus differ.

What are some common challenges faced by Electromagnetic Design Engineers when working on new product development?

Electromagnetic Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as minimizing electromagnetic interference (EMI), ensuring compliance with industry standards, and optimizing designs for both performance and manufacturability. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams—including mechanical, electronic, and software engineers—is essential to address these challenges and integrate electromagnetic solutions seamlessly into products. Regular testing, simulation, and iteration are key parts of the role, requiring adaptability and strong problem-solving skills.
