Electrical System Integration information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in electrical system integration roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Electrical System Integration often encounter challenges such as coordinating cross-functional teams, managing system compatibility issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Effective communication and strong project management skills are essential, as these roles frequently require collaboration with mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineers. Staying current with evolving technologies and regulatory requirements also helps address integration hurdles. Proactively participating in design reviews and thorough testing can further minimize integration risks and improve system reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical system integration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical System Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, system architecture, and experience with power distribution and control systems, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD tools, simulation software (like MATLAB/Simulink), and industry standards such as IEC or IEEE, along with certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and resolve complex integration issues. These capabilities ensure that electrical systems are safely and efficiently integrated, meeting both technical requirements and regulatory standards.

What is the difference between Electrical System Integration vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectElectrical System IntegrationElectrical Design Engineer
CertificationsPE license, relevant electrical certificationsPE license, electrical engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentField installation, system testing, commissioningDesign offices, CAD work, project planning
Primary FocusAssembling, testing, and commissioning electrical systemsCreating electrical system designs and schematics
Industry UsageConstruction, manufacturing, energy projectsProduct development, infrastructure projects

Electrical System Integration involves implementing and testing electrical systems in real-world environments, ensuring they function correctly. In contrast, Electrical Design Engineers focus on designing electrical systems and creating detailed plans. Both roles require electrical engineering credentials but differ in their daily tasks and work settings.

What does an electrical system integration do?

An electrical system integration professional designs, installs, and tests electrical systems to ensure they work together effectively within a larger project. They often work with control systems, wiring, and power distribution, using tools like CAD software and following safety standards. Their role is essential in industries such as manufacturing, construction, and energy to ensure reliable and efficient electrical operation.

What is electrical system integration?

Electrical system integration involves designing, connecting, and coordinating various electrical components and systems to ensure they work together efficiently and reliably. It requires knowledge of electrical engineering, control systems, and often involves using tools like CAD software and testing equipment to verify proper operation. This role is essential in industries such as manufacturing, energy, and automation.

Job description

York Space Systems was founded to radically improve spacecraft affordability and reliability, transforming, and enabling next- generation space mission operations worldwide. Today, York is one of the most innovative aerospace companies, specializing in end-to-end customer solutions and the rapid production of spacecraft platforms. York's complete Space Segment Solution includes spacecraft production, payload integration, system integration & test, launch services, ground segment services, and mission operations, enabling customers to leverage York's existing technology solutions to get to orbit rapidly and responsively. We're looking to expand our team across the board.
As a Launch Systems Integration Engineer, you will serve as a key technical interface between York's spacecraft teams, launch vehicle providers, customers, and launch range organizations. You will lead the integration of York spacecraft onto launch vehicles, ensuring that technical requirements, interfaces, analyses, testing, and verification are aligned throughout the mission lifecycle.
This role provides the opportunity to work across a broad range of engineering disciplines and has a direct impact on mission success. You will help resolve complex spacecraft-to-launch-vehicle interface challenges, coordinate technical decisions across multidisciplinary teams, and support missions from early integration through launch campaign and flight.
We are open to candidates with varying levels of launch integration experience and will calibrate level based on experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordinate between York and launch vehicle teams to define and maintain environmental, mechanical, electrical, and other flight interfaces between the spacecraft, launch vehicle, and launch site.
  • Coordinate cross-functional technical analyses between spacecraft and launch vehicle teams, ensuring inputs, assumptions, and outputs remain aligned and configuration-controlled.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of Launch Systems Interface Requirements Documents (LSIRDs) and Interface Control Documents (ICDs) between the spacecraft and launch vehicle.
  • Drive requirements allocation and flowdown between spacecraft functional teams, launch vehicle systems, and subsystem design teams, ensuring interface requirements are understood and appropriately implemented.
  • Lead cross-functional resolution of spacecraft and launch vehicle interface conflicts, balancing technical requirements and developing system-level solutions that meet mission and customer needs.
  • Develop and execute integration test plans to reduce technical risk and verify spacecraft-to-launch-vehicle hardware interfaces.
  • Develop and manage verification and closure plans for interface requirements, ensuring compliance with York and customer expectations.
  • Track requirement verification evidence and drive closure of ICD requirements through integration and launch readiness.
  • Lead spacecraft launch integration and campaign activities at the launch range, coordinating technical teams and resolving issues through launch readiness and execution.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in aerospace, space systems, or a related engineering field.
  • Experience with spacecraft-to-launch-vehicle integration or other complex system integration activities.
  • Experience working with technical requirements, interfaces, verification, and/or system-level analyses.
  • Experience working hands-on with hardware or software technical projects.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ability to travel to launch sites, test sites, industry partner offices, and customer locations as needed.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with commercial rideshare, NSSL, or other launch integration programs. Experience leading spacecraft-to-launch-vehicle integration campaigns.
  • Experience supporting launch campaigns at the Range.
  • Experience with LSIRDs, ICDs, requirements allocation, and interface verification.
  • Experience providing functional technical leadership, such as leading anomaly investigations or other cross-functional technical teams.
  • Experience working directly with customers and/or launch vehicle providers.
  • Proposal development and technical writing experience.
  • Active secret clearance or higher

LOCATION & TRAVEL
This is an in-person role based at York Space Systems, with flexibility in day-to-day work arrangements based on team and mission needs. Regular collaboration with engineering teams and launch partners is an important part of the role.
Some travel is expected to support spacecraft integration, testing, launch campaigns, customer engagements, and activities at launch sites and industry partner locations.
Benefits
In addition to compensation, York Space Systems is proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance along with PTO and a 401K.
