What does an electrical PLC apprentice do?

An Electrical PLC Apprentice assists experienced technicians and engineers in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and related electrical systems in industrial settings. Their work often includes wiring, programming basic PLC functions, and learning how to interpret technical diagrams and schematics. Apprentices gain hands-on experience while studying safety procedures and the fundamentals of automation and control systems. Over time, they develop the skills necessary to operate and repair complex machinery used in manufacturing and process industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical PLC apprentice?

To thrive as an Electrical PLC Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of electrical systems, wiring, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), typically supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with PLC programming software such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and troubleshooting tools is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help apprentices collaborate with experienced technicians and learn quickly. These skills are crucial for safely supporting automation projects and ensuring reliable operation of industrial control systems.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical PLC apprentices during their training period?

Electrical PLC Apprentices often encounter challenges such as understanding complex wiring diagrams, troubleshooting control systems under time constraints, and adapting to rapidly evolving automation technologies. Balancing hands-on learning with theoretical instruction can also be demanding, especially when transitioning from classroom concepts to real-world applications. However, these challenges are excellent opportunities for growth, as apprentices receive guidance from experienced technicians and gradually take on more responsibility within the team.

Job description

Ready to be the go-to problem solver for plant power and controls?

Do you enjoy chasing down a tricky fault in a 480V, 3-phase system? Can you read a schematic, spot the weak link in a control loop, and bring production equipment back to life—safely and quickly? Join us and put your skills to work across heat treatment units, hydrotesters, threading lines, and integrated control systems.

What You’ll Tackle
  • Install, test, and service industrial electrical wiring and equipment using the right hand, power, and precision tools.
  • Troubleshoot with confidence—use ohmmeters, voltmeters, and megohmmeters to verify issues and eliminate root causes.
  • Make solid connections to breakers, transformers, and VFDs while following applicable codes.
  • Partner across trades to support mechanical troubleshooting, perform basic rigging, and keep the plant moving.
  • Champion safety through strict LOTO, PPE use, and adherence to site procedures.
Environment & Physical Demands
  • Comfortable working at elevation on ladders, scaffolds, and building roofs.
  • Operate effectively in a heavy industrial setting with extreme temperatures, dust, and dirt.
  • Qualified to operate, or able to become qualified to operate, forklifts and aerial lifts.
Your Technical Edge
  • Deep knowledge of 3-phase, 480V systems; AC/DC equipment; transformers; and plant power supplies.
  • PLC and automation literacy: ladder logic, digital logic, and I/O devices.
  • VFD and AC controls setup, programming, and troubleshooting.
  • Skilled at reading electrical schematics and mechanical blueprints.
  • Independent, organized, and responsive to changing production priorities.
What We’re Looking For
  • Minimum: High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: Electrician’s license, 2-year electrical technology degree, or completion of an electrical apprenticeship.
  • Schedule: Able to work rotating 12-hour days/nights, weekends, overtime, and respond to emergency call-outs.
  • Background Check: Candidates must pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and physical work assessment.
Skills You Bring
  • Industrial electrical troubleshooting and repair
  • Diagnostics for heavy equipment and plant systems
  • Electrical schematic interpretation
  • NEC awareness and practical application
  • Hands-on experience with industrial electrical systems and controls
Tools & Technologies You’ll Touch
  • Motor Control Centers (MCCs) (Allen Bradley, ABB, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Eaton)
  • Industrial controls (Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, ABB, Omron, Siemens, Schneider Electric)
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFD)
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) (Fanuc, Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Omron, Siemens)
  • Conveyor systems
  • Servo motors
  • CNC maintenance

If reliability, safety, and problem-solving are your trademarks, this role is built for you.
