Dewberry's Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Structural (MEPS) team includes a large group focused on design services for nationwide clients in specialized facility types and specialized design services. Our MEPS team contains subject matter experts in leadership roles in international professional organizations. Our repeat clients include universities, healthcare systems, state, local, and federal government agencies, and large global industrial manufacturers, among others. Because our backlog continues to grow and the demand for our expertise is accelerating, we are seeking an Electrical Discipline/Department Manager to join our Birmingham, AL office. As a Electrical Discipline/Department Manager, you will be responsible for providing operational and technical guidance and training/mentoring of our design resources in all areas of work we do associated with Electrical engineering. You will assist the Business Unit Manager and Service Line Leader in the development and implementation of growth strategies. You will also assist the Project/Client Managers by providing technical guidance to help meet the client's desires and budget. You will also work with a team of engineers on a variety of private, public, and federal projects. In addition to working with electrical engineers, you will team with architectural, mechanical, structural, and other disciplines to provide full-range services to our local and regional clients. In short, you will provide business leadership and technical guidance associated with electrical engineering to accomplish our project commitments and growth objectives. This role reports to the Business Unit Manager.

Responsibilities
The Electrical Discipline/Department Manager will be responsible for growing, mentoring, and developing the electrical staff in a way that allows each individual and our collective MEPS team to achieve maximum potential. More specifically:
  • Providing electrical technical guidance/leadershipto accomplish the work committed to in proposals and assigning / leading the appropriate electrical resources to do the work.
  • Assist Project/Client Managers by providing engineering resources - a design team - to help meet the client's desires and budget. Duties would also include some involvement in direct sales and assisting with sales efforts for multidiscipline projects.
  • Technical and Quality oversight of all electrical work. Authority for all technical decisions made for projects within the Department including establishing/improving electrical design standards.
  • Provide 'on-the-spot' advice and decisions, technical and cost estimates.
  • Coordination with all disciplines involved, including outside consultants.
  • Taking a highly active role in recruitment of electrical staff including networking, recruitment, interviewing and "deal closing".
  • Organizing electrical staff in a way to allow career advancement, professional development, quality client service, and operational efficiencies to meet business and project financial goals.
  • Schedule for the electrical department/staff including:
  • Project assignments and priorities
  • Delivery due dates for group project commitments
  • Workload/Capacity
  • Annual evaluations for each direct report.
  • Provide general updates of where electrical discipline is at on projects (status in the process, tasks to complete, percentage complete currently, budget, etc.)
  • Identify milestone dates when each discipline should provide information, at each phase, to allow sufficient time for good design coordination.
  • Attention to project scope during the design process to identify potential additional services.
  • Simply put - Discipline/Department Managers control all production resources, and all commitments must come from Discipline/Department Managers. Conversely - accountability for our deliveries comes from Discipline/Department Managers.

Required Skills & Required Experience
  • Accomplished electrical engineer/PE
  • 15+ years of progressive technical experience in the design of electrical systems.
  • Experience should include technical oversight of multiple projects with proven success in meeting contract specifications and achieving high performance and growth of a team.
  • Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
