Electrical License Qualifier information

What is an electrical license qualifier?

Electrical License Qualifiers are licensed electricians who allow a company or contractor to operate under their license, meeting state or local requirements for electrical work. They are responsible for ensuring that all electrical work performed by the business complies with relevant codes and safety standards. The Qualifier typically oversees projects, reviews work for compliance, and may be held legally accountable for the quality and legality of the company's electrical work. This role is essential for businesses that need a licensed professional to meet regulatory requirements but may not have one on staff full-time.

What are the typical responsibilities of an electrical license qualifier?

An Electrical License Qualifier is often responsible for ensuring that all electrical work performed by a company complies with local and state regulations. This includes reviewing project plans, overseeing installations, and providing guidance to electricians on code requirements. Qualifiers frequently collaborate with project managers, inspectors, and other trades to ensure safety and quality standards are met across job sites. They may also be involved in regular site visits, documentation, and training team members on best practices. Effective communication and leadership skills are essential, as they serve as the company's representative for licensing and regulatory matters.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical license qualifier?

To thrive as an Electrical License Qualifier, you need extensive knowledge of electrical codes, systems design, and installation practices, typically supported by a journeyman or master electrician license and years of field experience. Proficiency in interpreting blueprints, using testing equipment, and familiarity with permitting and inspection software are crucial. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure compliance and smooth project management. These skills are vital for upholding safety standards, passing inspections, and maintaining a company’s legal eligibility to operate.

Job Overview

  • Company: LED INDY
  • Salary/Pay Rate: $30 to $40 per hour, based on experience and demonstrated capability.
  • Location: Indianapolis, IN (Primarily local, with occasional overnight or out-of-area work).
  • Job/Employment Type: Full Time.
  • Project Scope: Commercial, industrial, service, remodel, and new construction.
  • Mandatory Licenses & Certifications: Journeyman License.

The Opportunity

LED INDY is seeking an experienced Journeyman Electrician who can independently execute commercial and industrial electrical work. This position is ideal for an electrician who wants more ownership, greater visibility, and the opportunity to help shape a growing electrical division. You will work on a wide range of projects involving electrical distribution, lighting, data, low-voltage systems, service work, remodels, and new construction. At LED INDY, strong performance is noticed. You will work closely with company leadership, take ownership of field execution, and have opportunities to grow as the company expands.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Execute daily field activities on commercial and industrial electrical projects.
  • Plan electrical work, identify required materials, and complete installations with minimal supervision.
  • Install and troubleshoot commercial electrical systems, including services, panels, transformers, feeders, conduit, lighting, and branch circuits.
  • Perform work involving three-phase electrical systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Bend and install conduit accurately, including offsets.
  • Complete underground electrical work, service upgrades, remodels, and new installations.
  • Support projects involving EV chargers, lighting systems, data, low-voltage systems, fire alarm, and access control.
  • Troubleshoot power-distribution and electrical-service issues in commercial and industrial environments.
  • Coordinate field work with project leadership, customers, general contractors, and other trades.
  • Train and mentor less-experienced electricians and apprentices.
  • Maintain accurate time and project information using a smartphone-based field-management system.
  • Work from ladders and lifts and perform the physical duties associated with commercial construction.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Significant commercial or industrial electrical experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of three-phase electrical systems.
  • Ability to perform commercial electrical work independently.
  • Ability to read plans, determine materials, and organize field work without repeated direction.
  • Demonstrated conduit-bending ability.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of electrical codes and safe work practices.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with team members and customers.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to use a smartphone for timekeeping and job documentation.
  • Professional, dependable, and accountable approach to work.
  • Ability to lift approximately 50–60 pounds and work from ladders, lifts, and elevated areas.
  • Willingness to work occasional nights, travel assignments, or overnight projects when needed.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Approximately 7–10 years of commercial or industrial electrical experience.
  • Valid journeyman electrician license or equivalent recognized field experience.
  • Experience with electrical services, panels, transformers, underground work, EV chargers, and commercial remodels.
  • Experience mentoring or training electricians and apprentices.
  • OSHA, lift, fall-protection, or other applicable safety certifications.
  • Candidates with fewer years of experience may also be considered when they demonstrate strong commercial skills, three-phase knowledge, reliability, work ethic, and the potential to grow within the division.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $30–$40 per hour, based on experience and technical skill.
  • Overtime opportunities based on project needs.
  • Biweekly pay cycle.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution.
  • Paid training and applicable safety certifications.
  • Uniforms and required safety equipment provided.
  • Per diem and accommodations for qualifying travel assignments.
  • Company vehicle eligibility depending on position, responsibilities, and experience.
  • Performance reviews with opportunities for advancement and increased compensation.

Why Join LED INDY?

  • Join a growing company where your contributions are visible and valued.
  • Work directly with company leaders rather than becoming another number in a large organization.
  • Take ownership of meaningful commercial and industrial projects.
  • Gain exposure to lighting, electrical, data, service, remodel, and new-construction work.
  • Help train future electricians and contribute to the growth of the electrical division.
  • Build a long-term career with advancement opportunities tied to performance and responsibility.
