Position Summary
A Park Maintenance Worker-I performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks on park grounds, facilities and components and general preventive maintenance on department equipment and vehicles.
This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Six months work experience.
Education and/or experience preferences: Previous experience with irrigation and play component installation highly desirable.
Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None
Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.
Required certifications, licenses or registrations: None
Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: Any certification pertaining to irrigation or play component highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: Working knowledge of the methods, equipment, and materials used in the care and maintenance of parks and recreation centers. Working knowledge of plants, their diseases, and methods of control. General knowledge of carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and other building trades. Working knowledge of automated irrigation system operation, maintenance, and installation. Working knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions involved in equipment operation and park maintenance and development.
Skills: The operation of tools and equipment typical in parks, facilities and play component installation and maintenance.
Abilities: Learn to operate, maintain and repair power tools and equipment used in the work. Learn how to maintain turf, trees, shrubs and other planting materials. Perform basic mathematical operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and determine weight measurement, volume and distance. Effectively deal with standardized situations. Read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence and/or memos and irrigation manuals, training guides, standard operating procedures and MSDS manuals. Write simple correspondence, reports and work logs. Communicate effectively. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, members of the public and public officials.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with craft workers and department supervisors to construct and repair parks and facilities on time and within cost. External: General public, customers, and public officials. Participates in the Sandoval County Disaster First Responds Team.
Essential Functions

  • Maintains parks, grounds and facilities in a safe, aesthetically pleasing condition.
  • Performs minor semi-skilled interior and exterior park building maintenance such as painting, fence repair, graffiti removal and related park improvements.
  • Maintains, adjusts and operates specialized turf care equipment and tools.
  • Controls weeds and insects by chemical spraying and completes a pesticide report.
  • Builds park grounds and facilities.
  • Installs and maintains trails, including all elements of accessibility requirements.
  • Installs and/or maintains play structures, skate park, and dog park components in accordance with playground design and safety requirements.
  • Assists with the installation, maintenance and seasonal preparation of watering systems.
  • Performs basic operator maintenance tasks on assigned vehicles.
  • Sets-up and takes-down large industrial tents.
  • Assists supervisor in construction and installation of tree memorial plaques.
  • Installs high tensile (livestock, chain-link) fencing.
  • Prepares athletic fields for practice and games.
  • Maintains open space and bosque areas.
  • Maintains culverts/drainage ditches within City park limits.
  • Provides support to City departments for special event set-up, break down, storage and maintaining park facilities during the event.
  • Mixes pesticide chemicals; operates spraying equipment and applies pesticides.
