How much do electrical high voltage jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for electrical high voltage in the United States is $40.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $29.33 and $52.16 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an electrical high voltage?

An Electrical High Voltage job involves the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems operating at high voltages, typically above 1,000 volts. Professionals in this role work with power transmission, distribution, and industrial electrical systems to ensure safe and efficient operation. They follow strict safety protocols, conduct inspections, and perform repairs to prevent electrical failures. These jobs are common in industries like utilities, manufacturing, and renewable energy. Workers may need specialized training and certifications to handle high-voltage equipment safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in electrical high voltage roles?

To thrive in an Electrical High Voltage role, you need strong expertise in electrical systems, troubleshooting high voltage equipment, and relevant technical education, often supported by an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a similar field. Familiarity with industry-standard safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and certifications like OSHA or NFPA 70E is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are key soft skills that help ensure safe and efficient project execution. These skills and qualities are crucial for minimizing risks, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining high system reliability in demanding electrical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in electrical high voltage roles?

Professionals in Electrical High Voltage roles often encounter challenges such as working in hazardous environments where strict safety protocols must be observed, troubleshooting complex electrical faults, and responding to emergency outages or equipment failures. They may also face varying weather conditions when working outdoors or on-site, as well as the need to stay up-to-date with evolving industry standards and new technologies. Collaboration with engineers, utility crews, safety inspectors, and other maintenance professionals is essential, and effective communication is key to coordinating tasks safely. While the work can be demanding, it offers valuable exposure to critical infrastructure and can open pathways to supervisory or specialized technical positions over time.

Do electrical high voltage electricians get paid more?

Electrical high voltage electricians typically earn higher wages than those working with lower voltage systems due to the increased risk, specialized skills, and certifications required. Their pay can also vary based on experience, location, and the complexity of the projects they handle.

Job description

High Voltage Electrical Engineer

High Voltage Electrical Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a High Voltage Electrical Engineer to design, develop, and validate high-voltage power systems and mixed-signal electronics for industrial and manufacturing applications. The role focuses on end-to-end hardware development including schematic capture, PCB design in Altium, high-voltage bring-up and testing at high kV levels, and delivering manufacturable designs with strong DFX practices. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced startup environment and collaborate across R&D, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to move prototypes into reliable production.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of high-voltage power electronics and mixed-signal systems, including high-voltage isolation, insulation coordination, and safety design for kV-class systems.
  • Create and review schematics and PCB layouts using Altium, ensuring signal integrity, creepage/clearance, and manufacturability.
  • Perform hands-on prototype bring-up, debugging, and validation of high-voltage hardware in the lab; define and execute test plans and failure analysis.
  • Develop and maintain detailed design documentation, BOMs, and test procedures to support production handoff and regulatory reviews.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to ensure robust system integration and successful production ramps.
  • Apply DFX principles to optimize designs for assembly, test, cost, and reliability in industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Design and review safety systems, protection circuitry, and compliance evidence to meet applicable standards and industry best practices.
  • Build and maintain test fixtures, high-voltage measurement setups, and automated test routines for repeatable validation.
  • Troubleshoot field issues and support customer-facing commissioning or diagnostics when required.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of design processes in a startup setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in high-voltage power electronics design, development, or testing involving kV-level systems.
  • Proven experience with PCB schematic capture and layout in Altium, with a portfolio of designs demonstrating mixed-signal and high-voltage considerations.
  • Strong understanding of mixed-signal electronics, high-voltage insulation, creepage/clearance, and isolation techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype bring-up, lab testing, high-voltage probes, oscilloscopes, and failure analysis methodologies.
  • Familiarity with DFX practices, industrial manufacturing processes, and for testability/assembly considerations.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices for high-voltage equipment.
  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and cross-functional communication skills. Startup experience and the ability to work in fast-paced, iterative development cycles preferred.

Benefits

  • Health, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • 401K with match
  • Equity
