How much do electrical engineering light current jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for electrical engineering light current in the United States is $111,091.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,000.00 and $132,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is electrical engineering light current?

Electrical engineering light current refers to the branch of electrical engineering that deals with low voltage and low current electrical systems. This typically includes fields such as telecommunications, electronics, control systems, instrumentation, and information technology. Unlike heavy current (which involves high voltage power distribution and machinery), light current focuses on the design, installation, and maintenance of systems like alarms, audio-visual equipment, networking, and building automation. Professionals in this area work with wiring, circuit boards, sensors, and digital systems to ensure functionality and safety in various environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer specializing in light current, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer specializing in Light Current, you need a solid background in electronics, circuit design, and signal processing, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, PLC programming, and industry standards such as IEC or SANS, as well as certifications like ECSA registration, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure reliable, safe, and efficient design and maintenance of low-voltage and electronic systems.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineering Light Current vs Electrical Engineering Power?

AspectElectrical Engineering Light CurrentElectrical Engineering Power
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related fieldRequires a bachelor's degree, often with additional specialization or certifications in power systems
Work EnvironmentIndoor settings, control panels, communication systems, low-voltage circuitsOutdoor and industrial settings, high-voltage systems, power plants, transmission lines
Industry UsageTelecommunications, automation, building management, control systemsPower generation, transmission, distribution, large-scale industrial plants

Electrical Engineering Light Current focuses on low-voltage systems like communication and control, while Electrical Engineering Power deals with high-voltage power systems for energy transmission and distribution. Both roles require similar foundational knowledge but differ significantly in work environment and application.

What are the typical projects and collaborative dynamics for an electrical engineering light current professional?

Electrical Engineering Light Current professionals often work on projects involving low-voltage systems such as security systems, fire alarms, building automation, and telecommunications. These roles typically require close collaboration with architects, civil engineers, and IT specialists to ensure proper integration of systems within broader infrastructure projects. Day-to-day activities can include site inspections, system design, troubleshooting, and client meetings. Being able to communicate technical concepts clearly and adapt to evolving project requirements is essential in this fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
