What does an electrical engineer specializing in PCB do?

An Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is responsible for designing, developing, and testing circuit boards used in electronic devices. They work on creating schematics, selecting appropriate components, and laying out the physical board to ensure functionality, performance, and manufacturability. These engineers collaborate with other team members to meet project requirements and often troubleshoot or optimize designs for reliability and cost-effectiveness. They also ensure that PCBs comply with industry standards and safety regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer specializing in PCB design?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB design, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, circuit theory, and PCB layout principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with design tools like Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as familiarity with industry standards such as IPC, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure designs meet both technical requirements and team objectives. These competencies are essential for creating reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective PCB solutions in fast-paced engineering environments.

What are some common challenges electrical engineers face when designing PCBs, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical Engineers working on PCB design often encounter challenges such as managing signal integrity, minimizing electromagnetic interference, and fitting complex circuits into limited board space. Addressing these issues requires a strong understanding of layout best practices, careful component placement, and collaboration with mechanical engineers to ensure manufacturability. Staying updated on industry-standard design tools and regularly reviewing designs with cross-functional teams can help mitigate these challenges and lead to successful project outcomes.

Job description

Who we are

With its A.I.-powered robotic technology platform, Symbotic is changing the way consumer goods move through the supply chain. Intelligent software orchestrates advanced robots in a high-density, end-to-end system - reinventing warehouse automation for increased efficiency, speed and flexibility.

What we need

We are looking for a PCB Systems Architect - Design & Component Strategy to join our Electrical Engineering team within our Bot Hardware organization. Your job will be to elevate how we design, standardize, and scale PCB systems across the company.

In this role, you'll go beyond board design-you'll define the tools, libraries, and component strategies that enable an entire engineering organization to move faster and build better products. You'll serve as a technical leader in PCB layout excellence, drive consistency across platforms, and play a key role in improving reliability, cost, and supply chain resilience.

This is a high-impact opportunity for someone who enjoys both hands-on design work and building the systems and standards that scale engineering teams.

What we do

The Electrical Engineering team is part of the Bot Hardware organization at Symbotic, responsible for building the electronic foundation that powers our autonomous robotic systems. We design and deliver the PCB architectures, component strategies, and hardware platforms that enable our robots to operate reliably at massive scale across warehouses, micro-fulfillment centers, and emerging applications.

Our work sits at the intersection of robotics, electronics, and high-performance system design-supporting some of the most advanced automation systems in the world.

What you'll do

Enable the Engineering Team - Tool & Library Management

  • Administer and optimize Altium Designer licenses, coordinate upgrades, and partner with IT for enterprise-level tool management.

  • Lead the consolidation of schematic and layout libraries across multiple existing design environments into a unified Altium ecosystem.

  • Establish and maintain a unified, authoritative Altium component library linked to our PLM system.

  • Develop, document, and champion the end-to-end process for submitting Altium designs to PLM.

Component Engineering - Strategy & Lifecycle

  • Drive adoption of automotive-grade components across new platform designs for best-in-class reliability.

  • Build and manage a common component platform strategy to accelerate design reuse and rapid product rollout.

  • Lead proactive cost reduction efforts through multi-vendor qualification and long-lifecycle component selection.

  • Synchronize new part creation workflows between Altium and PLM to eliminate errors and delays.

  • Qualify and validate alternate components to ensure supply chain resilience.

  • Own component lifecycle management: monitor end-of-life alerts, plan transitions, and maintain supply continuity.

PCB Layout Design - Excellence & Migration

  • Serve as the primary layout designer for PCBAs developed by the electrical engineering team.

  • Review all new layout designs to ensure quality, reliability, and adherence to Symbotic standards.

  • Provide layout support to cross-functional teams across the organization

  • Own the migration of legacy designs into Altium, fully integrated into Symbotic's design environment.

  • Define and enforce layout standards that raise the bar across all new product development.

What you'll need

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering with Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in PCB layout design, component engineering, or a related hardware discipline.

  • Deep expertise in Altium Designer; familiarity with OrCAD Capture and/or Eagle a strong plus.

  • Experience with component engineering, part qualification, and lifecycle management.

  • Background in automotive-grade component selection preferred - robotics, automotive, or industrial electronics experience ideal.

  • Familiarity with PLM systems and design-to-PLM workflows.

  • Strong understanding of signal integrity, power distribution, and EMC design principles.

  • Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple concurrent priorities.

  • Collaborative mindset - passionate about enabling others and raising team-wide standards.

Nice to have

  • Experience supporting multi-site or distributed engineering teams.

  • Exposure to AGV, robotics, or embedded systems hardware design.

  • Familiarity with IPC standards and PCB manufacturing processes.

  • Experience with ERP/PLM platforms such as Siemens Teamcenter.

Our environment

  • Up to10%of travel may berequired. Employees must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

  • The employeeis responsible forowning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
