What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB design, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB design, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, circuit theory, and PCB layout principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with design tools like Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as familiarity with industry standards such as IPC, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure designs meet both technical requirements and team objectives. These competencies are essential for creating reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective PCB solutions in fast-paced engineering environments.

What are some common challenges Electrical Engineers face when designing PCBs, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical Engineers working on PCB design often encounter challenges such as managing signal integrity, minimizing electromagnetic interference, and fitting complex circuits into limited board space. Addressing these issues requires a strong understanding of layout best practices, careful component placement, and collaboration with mechanical engineers to ensure manufacturability. Staying updated on industry-standard design tools and regularly reviewing designs with cross-functional teams can help mitigate these challenges and lead to successful project outcomes.

What does an Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB do?

An Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is responsible for designing, developing, and testing circuit boards used in electronic devices. They work on creating schematics, selecting appropriate components, and laying out the physical board to ensure functionality, performance, and manufacturability. These engineers collaborate with other team members to meet project requirements and often troubleshoot or optimize designs for reliability and cost-effectiveness. They also ensure that PCBs comply with industry standards and safety regulations.

Job description

About Radiant

Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the world’s first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The company’s first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt, fail-safe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to 5 years without refueling. Portable nuclear power with rapid-deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiant’s unique, practical approach to nuclear development leverages modern software engineering to rapidly deliver safe, factory-built microreactors that use existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory this summer, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.

About the Role

Radiant is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer with a strong focus on PCB design to lead the electrical architecture for terrestrial reactor control systems, with a long-term path toward space reactor applications. You will serve as the technical authority for custom hardware, owning the design and development of high-reliability, low-noise printed circuit boards - from requirements definition and schematic capture through layout, bring-up, validation, and field deployment.

This role emphasizes full-stack PCB development, including mixed-signal design, high-speed interfaces, power distribution, and signal integrity, while supporting data acquisition, signal conditioning, estimation, and real-time processing functions critical to reactor control.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Own the design and development of multilayer PCBs for reactor control and instrumentation systems (terrestrial, with future space applications).

  • Define electrical architecture for mixed-signal systems, including power distribution, analog front ends, and digital control interfaces.

  • Design low-noise analog front-end circuits and ensure robust integration with ADC/DAC and digital subsystems.

  • Perform schematic capture, component selection, and PCB layout with focus on signal integrity, power integrity, grounding, and EMI/EMC mitigation.

  • Develop and review high-speed, high-precision layouts (e.g., sensor interfaces, data-acquisition paths, communication buses).

  • Bring up, debug, and validate hardware, including board-level testing, instrumentation, and root-cause analysis.

  • Create and execute hardware validation and qualification test plans for performance, reliability, and environmental conditions.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with firmware, FPGA, DSP, and responsible engineers to ensure seamless hardware/software integration.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

  • 5+ years of experience designing custom PCBs, including multilayer and mixed-signal boards.

  • Strong experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium, Cadence, or similar).

  • Solid understanding of signal integrity, power integrity, grounding strategies, and EMI/EMC mitigation techniques.

  • Experience with analog and mixed-signal design, including sensor interfaces, ADC/DAC integration, and low-noise design practices.

  • Familiarity with high-speed interfaces (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet) and layout constraints.

  • Hands-on experience with board bring-up, debugging, and lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, etc.).

  • Ability to work across disciplines and support system integration in a complex engineering environment.

Desired Qualifications & Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

  • Experience designing for high-reliability or harsh environments (nuclear, aerospace, defense, or industrial).

  • Familiarity with radiation effects and radiation-tolerant electronics design.

  • Experience with power electronics or power distribution design.

  • Exposure to FPGA or embedded systems to support hardware/software co-design.

  • Familiarity with nuclear instrumentation or detector interface electronics.

  • Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM), design for test (DFT), and production bring-up.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to accomplish our mission.

  • Must work 100% onsite at El Segundo HQ.

Benefits and Perks
  • Stock: Substantial incentive stock plan for all full-time employees.

  • Medical: 100% up to base silver level plan for employee + 50% dependents, offers up to Platinum plans.

  • One Medical: Sponsored memberships for employees and their dependents.

  • Vision: 100% top tier plan coverage + 50% for dependents.

  • Dental: 100% top tier plan coverage, orthodontia extra, 50% for dependents.

  • Voluntary life, accident, hospital, critical illness, commuter and FSA/HSA are offered as employee contributed benefits.

  • 8-weeks of paid parental leave for all parents. Additional paid pregnancy leave for CA employees.

  • Daily catered lunch. Free snacks and drinks.

  • Flexible PTO policy. Remote workday allocation.

  • Company and team-bonding events, happy hours and in-person camaraderie.

  • Beautiful El Segundo headquarters close to the Pacific Ocean.
