Description

Join us to shape communities, collaborate with passionate professionals, and grow with a company that invests in your success, where you're not just an Employee but an Owner.

About Our Firm

Since 1968, NTH Consultants, Ltd. has been a critical part of the infrastructure engineering and environmental services that strengthen our communities and protect our ecosystem. From geotechnical engineering and environmental consulting to structural design and construction management, electric power engineering, and beyond, we provide solutions that support the success and sustainability of projects.

When you join NTH, you'll gain more than a job- you'll become part of a team that values your career, your growth, and your life. We are committed to providing a flexible and supportive environment, professional development opportunities, and a vibrant culture that celebrates collaboration and innovation. Our culture is built on accountability, ownership, inclusion, integrity, safety, and excellence.

How This Role is Unique

NTH is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Power Systems Designer for a key position in our newly formed Electrical Engineering Power and Utilities Division. This position is intended to be based out of our Grand Rapids office, with potential for an experienced and independent candidate to work out of our Northville or Lansing offices.

This is not purely a CAD / Drafter role. We are seeking an experienced candidate, familiar with electrical equipment and installations, to design, layout, and draft electrical power systems including Electrical Distribution Systems, Electrical Substations, and Control Panels. Previous experience supporting electrical construction, installation, maintenance, testing, commissioning, or utility operations is highly valued. We also seek a candidate who is familiar with and interested in developing and owning electrical drafting standards and templates.

This role is expected to be primarily office-based but will require approximately 15% travel in mainly lower Michigan, to examine sites and equipment needing to be designed, or to simply gain more familiarity with certain types of electrical equipment or installations.

This is a ground-floor opportunity to help build NTH's Electrical Engineering Power and Utilities Division. The right candidate will help to direct and build the division's CAD standards and operating procedures, in addition to being a key member of the design team and a subject matter expert in constructability of electrical systems.

How You Will Make An Impact

Communicate effectively with clients in-person, over the telephone, and via written communications to build trust and repeat business.

Work safely and follow customer and NTH safety programs in industrial, utility, and construction field environments.

Prepare CAD layouts of electrical systems based on direction from engineers.

Understand and apply electrical clearances based on direction from engineers.

Develop subject matter expertise in electrical equipment layouts and electrical constructability.

Develop CAD standards, templates, and standard operating procedures.

Coordinate CAD work with CAD personnel in other NTH divisions and provide electrical specific direction.

Travel independently to job sites when necessary to understand designs or equipment.

Support development of NTH Electrical BIM capabilities, including 3D equipment layouts and substation models.

Mentor junior engineers and technicians in electrical design, constructability, and CAD.

Work closely and coordinate design with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers.

Be an early member of the NTH Electrical Division, with high potential for skill and career growth, mentorship, and impact on division culture.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

Ability to work independently and safely in utility, industrial, and construction environments.

Familiarity with and understanding of utility electrical equipment, installations, and clearances.

Proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, MicroStation, Revit, or similar CAD software.

Familiarity with utility, industrial, or renewable energy electrical design standards.

Familiarity with electrical design deliverables including one-lines, schematics, grounding, and equipment layouts.

Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to work in a team environment as well as independently, and strong interpersonal skills for contact with clients and fellow engineers/technicians.

Desire to build subject matter expertise in electrical design and constructability.

Accuracy, dependability, and strong organizational skills

Ability to manage multiple assignments at the same time and coordinate tasks across engineering and design teams.

Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

Must hold a valid driver's license and be willing to travel within the lower peninsula of Michigan.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.

Degree or certificate in Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD).

Field experience in electrical substations, power plants, renewable energy or industrial facilities.

Familiarity with underground conduit systems, cable routing, duct banks, grounding systems, and equipment foundations is desirable.

Experience laying out electrical equipment and designing to electrical clearances.

Experience with BIM software or 3D modeling.
