As an HealthMarket Assistant Department Manager at Hy-Vee, you'll play a key role in keeping one of our most exciting departments running smoothly. Working alongside the Department Manager, you'll help ensure products are fresh, innovative, and competitively priced, while creating a welcoming experience for every customer who walks through the department.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting customers warmly, learning their names, and going the extra mile to make every visit a positive one

  • Assist customers with finding products, reaching items, carrying heavy purchases, and answering questions about the department

  • Maintain strong product knowledge and stay current on new trends to educate and guide customers effectively

  • Set and reset the sales floor to effectively promote products and keep the department looking its best

  • Ensure products are adequately stocked, neatly faced, and the department is clean and well organized at all times

  • Receive merchandise, verify shipments, check in product, confirm delivery accuracy, and log invoices as needed

  • Assist with pricing, inventory, and vendor issue resolution on a daily basis

  • Train new employees and help maintain department standards

  • Follow proper sanitation procedures and keep the work area clean and safe

  • Step up to manage the department in the absence of the Department Manager

  • Assist with ordering product at the Department Manager's direction

  • Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies

  • Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed

  • You'll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Health Wellness Home, Store Operations, and Perishables, and HealthMarket Department Manager

Your Skills

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service and inspire others to do the same

  • Solve practical problems and make sound decisions with a variety of variables

  • Use basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Organize and manage materials, guide team members, and provide clear direction

  • Handle confidential information, including pricing and sales data, with discretion

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; 1 to 3 years of similar or related experience preferred

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Health Wellness Home, Store Operations, and Perishables, and HealthMarket Department Manager

Direct Reports: Full and Part Time HealthMarket Clerks

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • 1 to 3 years of similar or related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-moving role where things stay busy and engaging. You may encounter exposure to dust, noise, and equipment movement hazards on a daily basis, with occasional exposure to cleaning products or solvents. The role involves working with and around standard store equipment, including electrical equipment. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
